EFS results finally out! Successful - yay!

Me too, except that because I don't have any formal qualifications in either French or German my offer is conditional on a test to make sure that my French is up to the required standard. Does anyone else have to do one of these, or does anyone know anything about them?
Congratulations! It'll be really nice to meet everyone in a few months. I don't need to take the test so I'm sorry I can't shed any light on it - I guess it will be very similar to A-level standard, maybe even a bit lower since most people will have got a bit rusty since school. Best of luck with it - I'm sure it'll be fine !

Thanks guys, and congratulations to you too! So is A-level equivalent supposed to be B1 or B2 in CEFR terms?

Hi all - I'm another long time lurker of this thread who has finally bit the bullet and registered!

I've been offered places on both the GFS and TiB and opted for the GFS. However, I've since had an email and a phone conversation from someone relatively senior trying to persuade me to go for TiB instead. Has anybody else found this by any chance?

I was relatively happy with my choice of the GFS, though I did say I'd have a think about switching over to TiB, and she's asked a couple of TiB FSers to get in touch with me. I got a relatively low score at the FSAC so I imagine I'd be one of the last people placed and although I think I might find GFS more interesting, I suspect I might do better at TiB.

Just thought I'd see if anybody had a similar experience of this. I was certainly flattered that they're the ones now selling themselves to me rather than vice-versa!

Also a very belated thank you to TSR - I don't doubt that this thread played an important part in actually getting me through the application process.

There is high demand in government for good quality TiBers. A lot of government costs are substantially inflated by the need to rely on IT consultants.

The GFS is more established but I expect the TiB scheme will probably give bigger, more rewarding challenges sooner.

I have accepted a place on TiB so feel free to PM me with any questions etc.

Seem to recall reading that it is easier to move from specialist areas to generalist, than the other way and that might be sthg to think about, as well.

My opinion would be biased, as an incoming TiBer. However, I am thoroughly convinced that Government IT will provide incredible excitement. If you've not read through it already, have a look at the UK government ICT strategy implementation plan. It will provide 71 pages of incite into all the interesting things happening and give you an idea of the kind of opportunities available.

IT is at the heart of the transformation of public services. For me, it'd be a no-brainer, picking between TiB and GFS, especially if you have an interest and aptitude for technology. You will get the opportunity for Policy, Operations and Corporate roles like the GFS. You could be a Project Manager or Senior Project Manager in one of your rotations. With a shift towards in-sourcing capabilities, there will be great opportunities for quite a while.

I can tell you that I personally couldn't be more excited about the prospects of what I could be doing soon. I've also got some ideas of additional things I'd like to look into, and I'm looking forward to networking within the IT Profession in the civil service.

From taking language placement tests before, I think I remember being told that B1 is approximately the equivalent to a lower grade at A-level, like a C grade for example, and B2 probably more like an A at A-level. Fast stream are only looking for a C, so I guess their minimum standards will be around a B1. I could be wrong on that though, so don't quote me .

That sounds plausible! I should be ok in that case. I think my French is comfortably B1 standard. Hopefully see you in the autumn!

I hear its a really good department and that they are planning on making more secondment systems anyway so you won't be stuck in one department. You also have considerable power (if you are into that sort of thing), there was case where a fresh graduate had to go to a Local Authority and tell the management that they are not following government directives, pretty scary but exciting too.

I still don't know where I am placed yet! Have you finished all the backgrounds checks? My former employer is taking a long time!!!

Agree. I work in Civil Service and this sort of Dept gives you decent policy and front line experience - including lots of engagement opportunities which aren't just cross Whitehall related. This is something that lots of Fast Streamers find hard to find with their placements in some Departments. Once you are ready for G7 or secondments you'll be able to get additional experience. The big Depts like DWP and HMRC are so huge that you'll no doubt have a spin in them at some point in your career.
Re: Structure and Pay Grades

I found this which should be of interest to all new FSers and those who want to look into the FS as a career option

Did your offer say conditional on a 2:1? I'm wondering if as of the time you applied, you expected a 2:1 and your referees agreed, you still need to finish with one.

Second, being that you passed the EAC obviously, one option might be doing a Masters in Economics, at which point classification in the first degree is irrelevant. I'm not sure Birkbeck will accept a 2:2 but you never know if you apply early and have very strong recommendations.

Third, I'm aware they occasionally offer EO roles such as Economic Researcher to people who miss out narrowly for some reason. With 17.41 in your FSAC, which is a fantastic score for an analytical role, you may be considered.

Have you spoken to them and have they said definitely no? I don't think it's definitely all over for you.

Hey, I'm a final year undergraduate student in the middle of my exams... I don't know my classification yet but I've had some disastrous exams and did badly the last two years. I don't have an official offer yet as I was going to do my departmental visit in June, so I don't "know" its reliant on a 2:1, but this is what it said during the application process.

Secondly, I'm a statistician not an economist!! But, maybe the same things apply... I know that there are "statistical officer" roles too. Financially, there is no way I can afford a masters. I was supposed to be doing an integrated masters here at Warwick but I dropped down to the BSc when I got told I passed the FSAC.

Thanks for your help etc though!!!! I just suck at exams, to be honest, which is a shame because I'm pretty good at statistics!
I've been posted to the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills for CD =),

anyone else joining me?

Hi nius, I saw this message and thought ooh I better check my progress page and there it was, successful!!

I'm over the moon! I was 4th on the reserve list for NI stream so didnt know for sure whether I would get in but I'm so pleased!

I am just printing the forms at the moment. I presume we have to wait for forms 5 and 6 coming in the post before we send them all back?

Very excited! Do you have any idea how long the whole thing takes before NICS get in contact with us?

Yay! Glad you made it too crazychick!! Not sure about having to wait for forms 5 & 6? I have to wait for some documentation to come across from the US so I have to wait for that anyway (spent more than 2 months overseas). If I was you I'd probably just wait for the forms as it can't take them that long to get from London to here...at least I hope not!

No idea about when NICS will contact us...it said on the website that it will be 'soon' - a tad vague perhaps! Oh well, as long as I'm in I'm happy enough! Congrats!
