Chew gum - that helps me.

Quite frankly I am shocked by this thread, not one remotely helpful reply. I think part of the problem is that binge eating is something few of us have experienced, and we can only really comment on our own experiences. I haven't suffered from binge eating myself but I'll try to help anyway. First off there must be a reason for your binge eating. Is it boredom? Depression? Anxiety? Do you feel stressed in the evenings and that's why you eat?

You need to tackle to root cause of the problem, if you're bored listen to music, watch tv, spend time on TSR or something. Anything to take your mind off food. If you are feeling stressed take a bath or something instead.

Whatever you think is causing it, you need to see your GP about it, even if you don't think there's anything serious behind it, there will be things he can do to help, he'll be able to give better tips on avoiding eating than I can, and he will be able to help you with whatever you think is causing it. Your doctor will be concerned about your health and your weight, please go and see him/her soon, before it gets too serious, and please ignore any ignorant comments anyone makes on here.
^ There was nothing wrong with my post! I used to snack eat when I was younger, and started chewing gum to stop myself, and hence I reccommended it. However, you're right about tackling the route of the problem - I think that I used to eat because I was bored and just needed something to do whilst watching TV, so I started chewing gum to wein myself off eating between meals, and managed to give it up after a while. If you don't find this helpful advice, then eat fruit when you're binging because at least that's good for you.

Ok fine, it did seem a bit brief though, and chewing gum too often can be bad for you due to stomach acid, etc, not to mention what's in the gum.

I would agree that as an intermediate solution the OP should make sure (s)he is binge eating healthily, but I think thats probably easier said than done when foods that are bad for you are so much nicer than those that are good for you.

I do this too...despite a doing a lot of exercise and outdoor stuff I enjoy.

I put on weight when I got injured and because of the amount i binge I cant lose the weight I put on...since its at a stable level.

I wish i could be of more help, but i dont have a clue how to resolve this problem - pratikvs suggestion of chewing gum sounds worth a go though...

I suffer from your exact problem, im not sure wat really happens when the sun goes down but i know wat its like to just lose all self control!.Like alot of the useful replies the root of the problem is where u really need to look , but that could take some time so for now try doing things like eating a late supper (i dont know about u but i usually binge just before bed never befor dinner) which is quite big so that your full untill u go to bed. or just go to bed earlier and get up earlier in the morning if you have to do things. also brushin gyour teeth can be quite useful!. again healthy snacks are always good (but then one rarely craves an apple) try having something like low calorie hot chocolate. as it takes along time to make and drink so u cant just shove it all in at once.

I hope u find a way of getting thru this. pm me if u need anyone to talk to

I've had serious problems with binge eating and the best advice I've ever had was in a binge-eater's therapy group (so consider going to your local Overeater's Anonymous if you feel it would help http://www.oa.org/all_about_meetings.htm?country=ENGLAND#intl) Like Joe_87 said, you need to find out why you are doing it. It may help to keep a food diary for a week or so. Note down what you ate and more importantly how you felt before/during/after. If you find that you are an emotional overeater, confront whatever it is that triggers you. Perhaps your relationship with a particular person depresses you or you're trying to avoid homework etc. Maybe you'll find that just having that argument or getting that essay done will brighten your mood in the long run.
You also need to tackle the hunger. What you're aiming for is to keep your blood sugar levels fairly constant throughout the day. As a binge eater they are going up and down quite quickly which will make you hungry more often and increase your chances of diabetes amongst other things. I don't have the time to go into depth but the easiest way to control your blood sugar levels is- surprise- to cut down on sugar and simple starches and you will find that you get hungry less often. Replace crisps with carrots and cucumbers and puddings with fruit for a while and see how you feel. If you want further info on what foods will affect your blood sugar levels, a good guide is the glycemic index, which is freely available because it's the fashionable diet these days.

Hope that helps!
I have suffered from anorexia, bullimia, and binge eating and I have to say that binge eating was probably the most unbearable of the three. You reaaly do feel out of control. The best advice I have is just to force yourself to eat normally. For a few months don't even attempt to lose weight. Take each day as it comes, eat whenever you are hungry, and eat whatever you want. Try your hardest to get into a 'normal' eating pattern. This worked for me. My binges always used to occur when I'd been dieting or starving myself - for a year I went through a routine of starve for 2 weeks, binge for 2 days, etc... It was awful and totally life-crippling.

Feel free to PM me if you want to chat

This book was very helpful also: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0716021250/qid=1136975025/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/202-6750267-7452646
I hear you sweetheart. My problem came out of absolutely nowhere, Last christmas I was a size 10 and 9 1/2 stone, and in the space of just over a year i'm a size 14 and 11 1/2 stone. Im exactly the same as you, I have the best of intentions during the day and by the time eastenders starts, I have my head firmly in the buscuit tin!! I think my eating habbits generally stem from boredom, also being at university stuck in my room studying endlessly there isn't much room for exercise. Since forcing myself to buy a pair of size 16's, I have taken an initiative and I have been to the gym every day for the last 2 weeks, and i am honestly feeling the benefits already. Also i've found that as I now have something constuctive to do in the evenings I am not craving sweets and I buy only heathy snacks when I go shopping (those muller light yogurts are really good for a sweet tooth). Its been 2 weeks and people are already telling me I'm looking a lot heathier, in turn It has made me feel a lot better about myself.
If I can give you a good piece of advice it would be join the gym, and go as often as you feel comfortable with and don't go mad! Theres no point going twice a day and exhausting yourself, as the enthusiasm for that soon wears off, you get bored, you never go again. Even if you manage twice a week for an hour each time you will see the differences I promise.
Also I think somebody mentioned above that finding the route of the problem is the only sure way of curbing it. Whether its confidence, stress, anxiety boredom issues ect I think tackling those issues first will help with your binging habbits. Hope this helps

whenever you feel like eating something ,then do like a chocolate eat one serving of it, and when you feel like eating more, sit on your hands and try to breath slowly and think why do you want to it, it's propably a problem like a feeling that is translated to food like everybody is saying, i found out that lack of sleeping can be translated into the need of food, sleeping in the afternoon for an hour will enormously(sp?) help you

If you were that desparate you would have the will power to stop binge eating.
I know what you meen i suffered from binge0eating, and to all you people, yes it is a proper eating disorder. I guess you really, really, really just have to use you willpower and eventually keep trying because one day ull beable to stop. BUt it taked ages to stop properly, i found that banning myself from anything unhealthy for a bit worked and then let anything else just come naturally! oh and stop thinking about your weight, i know its hard but youve got to stop focusing on your weight.

Binge eating is definately really horrible! for some reason all rationalisation goes out the window and u need food and lots of it!i totally understand-last term was my first term at uni and towards the end when i was tired, run down and really not looking after myself i just ate and ate and ate! it was something to do, it was a kick for the ten seconds it was in your mouth, but the low after is so so horrible! when i came home i realised that i had to change what i was doing to myself! you have to have enough respect for yourself to look after yourself! i think everyone is right- you have to look at the cause! for me i think it was just adapting to uni and finding it all really overwhelming, but i've come back now so much stronger and am really taking care of myself! also im broke so i cant afford to buy much food! def keep all bad stuff away from you, if its not there you cant eat it! also when your about to put something in your mouth you deep down know isnt good for you or you dont need it tell yourself you dont need it and the low after is not worth the 1 second of enjoyment! so many people have this problem but you can deal with it i promise! good luck!!!
