Hey, I just found out I'm staying in Danesgate house too. I'm glad to hear there are quite a few first years. How did you find out your room numbers?

At first it did look awful to me, but I mean you're not exactly going to be living in luxury where ever you go and for like £57 a week I reckon it's good for the value, I actually can't wait to move in, yeah so it doesn't look nice outside but who cares we won't be looking at that for very long, it's more about what's in side that counts, and the rooms/bar/kitchens look pretty decent, lounge not as much but it will do, it could be a whole different experience when you get there

It really isn't that bad. Bernie said that they got given £1.6m and they had to decide whether to do the inside or outside, so they sorted out the inside.

Tbf if you had that choice wouldn't you rather change the inside?

Besides, the student village was worse - the apartment you see on open days, yeah it's nice but it's only really like that in the ground floor apartments. The one I was in, you had hardly any kitchen/living space, and the rooms were really small. For over £4k a year, definitely not value for money (plus loads of things were broke in our apartment - I remember us moving in and discovering that the kettle had mould in and that we had to assemble the vacuum cleaner ourselves).

Danesgate really isn't as bad as you think, if anything it's good for socialising plus it's quite close to a lot of the clubs and shops up town.

If you still don't like it after moving in and being there a while, then you can move out for second year.

I am really looking forward to it actually, despite living 10 minutes from campus, I'll probably spend the days on campus to be honest, but nevertheless it's the first time that we all get to live alone without our parents and it's a space we can call ours

Yep that's third floor (same floor as me but different flat).

It's a bit crappy on the outside (used to be a big office block for BT) but the inside more than makes up for it. There's 2 or 3 flats to a floor, with around 14-20 people in each flat. Giving my flat (3100) as an example, there's about 18 of us, split between 2 corridors (12 in one, 6 in another) - in each "corridor" there's a kitchen and 2 bathrooms (but don't worry you don't have to clean any of them).

As for the internet, you have a choice of 2 providers - AB Internet and Cyberair. AB Internet is cheaper, but you get more problems with it, and the password they give you changes. Cyberair is about £2 a month more expensive (if you buy a monthly ticket like I do) - around £17 - but I hardly ever have problems with it, plus if you have a power cut for whatever reason then it usually doesn't cut out.

I certainly prefer living in Danesgate compared to when I was in the Student Village.

what room are you in? I think we're gonna be in the same flat. I'm in 3112.

also does that mean if you're willing to pay you can get the net in your room or does that have to be in a communal area?

Hi, I'm in 3108. You'll be at the end of the first corridor (just by the door leading to the second lot of bathrooms and kitchen no.2, as well as 6 other rooms). My mate Rob is in 3110 so he's not that far from you.

It's in your room, there are wireless points in each flat - but you can get internet practically anywhere in the flat (including the kitchen).

If you don't get any info when you move in, then just search for your chosen provider (either AB Internet or Cyberair) in Google and you can sign up to it that way. There are different "tickets" you can get - a day, a week, a month, and I have seen a 6 month one as well.

Hope that helps you out a bit

well thats some good news, I heard that the only place you could get the net was in the communal area/i.t room so im happy about that. £17 a month doesnt sound that bad.

thats helped out a lot. thanks

i'm a first year too and thought exactly the same but went to see it today and yes it does look bad from the outside but inside it's fine. i met a few members of staff who were all nice and friendly- the security seemed good and i was told there is always someone around 24/7 if you ever need anything. I was shown round the whole building including my allocated apartment (i'm on the first floor, apartment 1) so now know what to expect. I was a bit unsure about the shared bathrooms but in my apartment there are 18 people and 4 bathrooms which isn't too bad. i was told that the kitchens and bathrooms are cleaned daily.
sorry about this being a bit of an essay but thought it would be helpful for people who felt like i did. Really recommend going to see it though.
