Most people would consider it to be as it is regarded as the ultimate way to show your love for someone. However there are many other important parts of relationships and sex is definitely not the be all and end all.

Yes. Both emotionally, it's an incredibly passionate, enjoyable experience to share, a way to show your feelings for the other person physically; and as a counter to the fact that not having sex can make the other person feel less attractive, less sexual and that you don't trust them enough to share it with them.

In fact, when a women orgasms, her body releases Oxytocin, which is a hormone that builds attachment to someone. It's an evolutionary mechanism to guide the women into staying with a man who may foster her children, but nowadays it just means that you tend to feel more attached to someone you've had sexual relations with.
