Surely that will just make it look more suspicious? Large amounts of encrypted traffic is just going to make you look like Gary Glitter.

Yes and i highly doubt any university will even try to decrypt TLS 1.0(SHA/RC4), that time and effort just for one student?
for the record torrents arent illegal its the content of the torrents which are illegal

for example a film = illegal

but if say the third age total war team host their mod using a torrent(like they do) this is not illegal as it is free ware software anyhow(as long as you own a copy of the original game in this case M2:TW and its expansions)

Probably all unis have a fair usage policy though so if you go over that then that might trigger them to look into what you're doing

the question is how would they monitor it though

as surely it all jsut comes up as one kitchen (room, hall whatever you want to call it) using say 380GB+ in a week rather than each individual room

Well I don't know how it works anywhere else but where I'm going to you have to register your computer with the network and it connects to the internet through an individual wired point. So I imagine it would be pretty easy to monitor who is who
Most have individual wired points in each room instead of wireless.

I see.

That sounds complicated, I mainly use torrents for albums and movies so a dongle would be pointless for me 'cause they have crappy download limits.

Btw the university is Hertfordshire, does anyone currently going there know if torrenting is blocked on their network?

I went to Hertfordshire and they do kind of block torrenting, it will let you do it but then it spots you and completely cuts you off from the network for a few hours, so you can't even browse the web until you get unblocked.
LOL this guy at my sister's uni who lived with her got his internet taken away cos he used a torrent to download the complete videography of this porn star.

Even over wi-fi most unis will make you authenticate yourself, so whatever traffic passes through is tied to your account.

Of course not, how would ISPs be able to implement fair usage policies otherwise.

Plus there is no such thing as the Internet Privacy Act: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Privacy_Act

What about things that aren't torrents (never used them) but stuff like internet TV and american shows online?

So why don't you encrypt the data?

I do believe the current encryption standard SHA take's 3000 years even with a super computer to crack!. best idea is to get everyone in the hall to encrypt their traffic.

NO university will take the time decrypt your data!

My university made a point that we were not allowed to use the internet for porn. What good they thought telling 3k+ horny teenagers that porn was forbidden would do I have no idea.

Sussex

Its not as if a letter went round entitled "The Dangers Of Pornography". It was a set list of 'rules' for using the internet. And "you cannot use the internet to profit from, reproduce, or view pornographic or offensive material". Or something along those lines. Like I said, no one got done in for doing it. They'd have to punish the entire campus.
