Oxford = Bad.

John's = Worse.

(See song "We'd rather be at Oxford than St. John's", sung to the tune of "She'll be coming round the mountain.")

Shadowish
St John's: We'd rather be in Oxford.

PLEASE put me out of my misery, someone explain this?!!!

Oh, We'd Rather Be at Oxford Than St. Johns
We'd Rather Be at Oxford Than St. Johns
Oh, We'd Rather Be at Oxford
Rather Be at Oxford
Rather Be at Oxford Than St. Johns

Basically St Johns has rather substandard reputation in other colleges, due to its appearance of being big, posh, rich and arrogant. Therefore it has become the college that all other colleges love to hate. The extent of this is shown by the fact many students would rather frequent the 'Other place' than St Johns.

To be honest it's all abit of healthy banter. However some St Johns porter actually locked their college gates in front of me and some of my mates whilst we were INSIDE the college and made us go out the back on a huge detour, so the whole boo St Johns thing does have genuine roots.

P.S. I have actually sung 'We'd rather be at Oxford......' in St Johns bar with a few friends and still failed to get kicked out!

What's Trinity's rep like?? Seeing how it's also big, rich and posh (and arrogant?). I always saw Trinity and St John's as being quite alike. They look similar, and they're next to each other!

St. John's killed the trinity cox (all be it a hundred years ago), during a boat race ......and I think that's why they hate them (traditionally)

I think John's has a worse reputation because they are so sporty. Lots of loud rugby players and boaties. Lots of drunken formals. I don't think the rep is really deserved, though I was thoroughly unimpressed by the idiot who decided to insult Sidney on our own doorstep.

John's Stereotype (wearing a John's rugby top with collar up and speaking in very posh voice): Don't go in! I followed the vom trail to the bar, hoping to find some decent talent. It was totally **** though. I mean, who actually goes to this college? Is it a real college?

Me: Yes it is. It's my college.

John's Stereotype (totally serious): My commiserations.

I used to work at the Heffers on Trinity Street and I have to say I saw a LOT of people dressed in this get-up. Sort of Jack Wills style, I'd call it. Preppy. There are quite a few posh types like this at my school (female version, since I'm at an all-girl's school).

Posh is fine. Obnoxious is not.

We are nothing alike. We look nicer. We are (much) richer and better in general.

And we are not arrogant. :mad:

Though recently, your ball hasn't been quite as good. Even a whole night of champagne couldn't disguise the fact that last year's effort basically boiled down to a bunch of tents in a field. :frown:

Bollocks to the story about the dead cox.

St. John's does have a reputation for being posh and arrogant. However, as with most of these things, it seems to be something that's referred to on principle (like saying that Peterhouse is full of gay tory men) rather than an opinion from experience shared by many people from other colleges. I think it's mostly that it's fun for people to have a college to hate. John's is too big for any stereotype to hold true.

I think there are two reasons why the animus is directed at John's rather than trinity: 1. John's was, until relatively recently, the largest and richest college, and 2. John's is much sportier than Trinity, and sports-people tend to be loud and obnoxious about their college loyalties, making their college seem arrogant.

I think he may have asked if I was pooled there too. This was 2 years ago now and I was a bit pissed at the time, so the memory is a bit hazy.
