Do dentists really earn more than GPs?

Hi everyone i was hoping you could help me with this. I know its a question people ask alot of the time but i can never seem to find a straight answer. Im a 2nd year medical student right now and my cousin got an offer from dentisty. Hes really excited about it ofcourse and so am i but i can't seem to wonder if hes right wen he says dentists always get paid more than doctors. Ive seen some of the dentist salary on NHS web but the GP salary dosen't seem to be THAT far of so why does everyone say doctors are paid less. Obviously im not going into medicine for the money but after all medicine is a career so money is important...as a GP (or some other doctor coz i haven't decided yet) will I not be able to earn as much as my cousin??

Thanks in advance

Just tell your cousin that you can save someone who is dying in the street, all he can do is fix their smile.
In the long run, a GP would earn more, because dentists all kill themselves before they get to retirement age.

Edit: It's called black humour, deal with it.

No. They retire before they get to retirement age because they're so loaded!

Let's call it 50/50 :P

Seriously, I would not be able to spend 30 years looking into peoples mouths and nothing else.
My dentist just won 'dentist of the year'
All he got was a little plaque.

I'd take the working hours of a dentist over a GP any day. GP hours would be the death of me.

Dentists earn a shed load more than doctors, in general.
NHS doctor pay is sucky.....dentists have a very established privatisation and get a significantly higher wage than the majority of doctors. Also the working hours are much nicer and the lifestyle generally better

I am a 5th year medic

I think dentists have one of the highest suicide rates among common careers, even higher than air traffic controllers, whereas anaesthetists have the highest success rate.

Must be something to do with stress?

Isn't that thing about dentists and suicide a bit of an urban myth, or at least isn't it skewed by the fact there aren't many dentists.

Can't be bothered to follow this up but this might cast some light onto it:

To answer the OP, I think partly it is related to running or being a partner in a practice. I think GPs do pretty well out of this too. Being an associate dentist / GP probably pay similar, or even worse for the dentist.
I would imagine many do earn more, but that is because most dentists also do private work along side their NHS work, simple things like white fillings that many people will opt for that increase their income without requiring specialist equipment.

And they like playing the system or as they like to call it "gaming".
I was told by a friend to look at some of the locum rates and after some research i found this website: http://www.mpplocums.co.uk/faq-for-locum-doctors/locums-frequently-asked-questions/what-are-mpp-locums-gp-pay-rates

do u guys think dentists would earn more than this and also wat is the typical salary of a dentist WITH private work in ur opinion??

Thanks very much for answering everyone...appreciate it

Why are you so focused on the pay, surely you did medicine for your own reasons and you cousin did it for their own reasons.

You seem to believe everything you're told, ''Your cousin told you this...'', ''Your friend told you that...'

lol im not focused on anything like that...its just a question. I was curious so i asked, nothing more. And besides its better to know the answer to this so in the future if anyone asks i can hav some input
