Applying to the same uni twice (with a similar course)

What are your opinions on applying to the same university twice with two different courses but the courses were similar, for example Medicine and Bio Medical Sciences. Would the universities see this and not give the applicant both offers, or would doing this be perfectly reasonable?

Also, please post if you have had 2 offers from the same university when applying to similar courses.

I want to know your opinions, thank you:smile:

This wouldn't disadvantage you because you can only apply to 4 medicine courses and you can apply to 2 others without there being a problem so the university won't mind that you have applied to another course there.
i applied to medicine and psychology and neuroscience as my back up at liverpool and i got offers for both. i think they do see both because at manchester the do special open days for life sciences for people who have also applied for medicine. if they do this i cant really see how they think it is bad

well i checked up on that one before i applied and its totally okay... but dont quote me on that incase it was just my course and selection of uni!

i applied for the following-

glasgow- english LANGUAGE with psychology - unconditional
glasgow- english LITERATURE with psychology - unconditional
dundee- english with psychology - unconditional
stirling- english studies with psychology - unconditional

my friend also applied to the same uni for physiotherapy and sports biomed and it didn't matter to them either.

if it makes you feel any better just give the uni a ring, they are always really helpful.

good luck!

It shouldn't really have any bearing on whether or not you get an offer for Medicine, and sometimes it can show your commitment to that particular uni - however, I would make sure that I had answers ready to questions like 'I see you've applied for Biomedical Science, why not just do that?' at interview. Just in case. Everyone knows that you will probably have a back-up.

Personally I went down a completely different route, applying sort of randomly for Sussex and Essex for bioscience-type subjects. But that's me.

Last year when I applied for the 1st time 2 of my choices were from Southampton - Biomedical Sciences and Physiology - both from the School of Biological Sciences - and got offers for both!

I even got the same 'School of Biological Sciences information pack' twice lol.

At the open day edinburgh actively encouraged us to apply for the med sci course as well as the medicine course. They spend 10 minutes of the "medicine" talk plugging it.

I would say yes do it, especially if you want a back up.However look carefully at the grade requirements. I applied for biochem at manchester as a backup, not realising i would be interviewed or need anything more than BBB.So do your research. I pulled out of the biochem at Manchester because i would reapply if I didnt get in for medicine, and didnt want to hog a place someone else might want, if I;m not going to take it. I was advised by many people to put a backup however.

So my advice is think about what your plans are (should you not get in etc.)
ps.im sure you;ll do fine though :P

I dont think it matters too much because the admissions tutors for medicicine know that u can put down 2 non medical choices. They actually advise u to do it because of the large volume of applicants. I have an offer for medicinal biochemistry at Kings and I also have an interview for medicine next month there as well. So i don't think it matters.

Do the unis know that you've chosen 2 similar courses in their uni, or not?

I think they do. Before I applied I rang up Kings and spoke to the admissions tutor, and she said i wouldn't be at a disadv if i applied to do biochem/medicinal biochem or any other course at kings. are u applying for 2006 entry?

I have two unconditional offers at bristol - one for cancer biology and one for neuroscience..
yeah, basically the general policy of most universities is that it's ok to apply to two similar courses there and you can receive offers for both of them, however, if you apply for two very different courses such as history and PE for example they may get annoyed and question your desire to do either subject hence you getting no offer. also it's hard to include different subjects in your personal statement. but yeah, for medicine certainly it's acceptable to apply to a science course as one of your two backups

Thanks for your advice guys, it was because someone told him that it wasn't wise to apply to 2 similar courses in the same uni if one of them was medicine because apparantly you won't get both offers or something like that.
