Is it (still) called the Prince Bandar Essay?
Reply 3
Yeah it's still a Bandar Essay (at least it was 4 months ago)

Woo Hoo!! I won it the year I went through, a year that was before most of you were born! Anyone want a copy of "The Battle of Hastings Assessed Through Modern Principles of War"?

With such a snappy title I can see it on the best seller paperback stand at W.H. Smith's now! Belated congratulations on winning the prize.. was it worth it? Let me think.. a trip to the carribbean all expenses paid or was it (and this is more likely given the state of the finances in the MOD even way back then!) a book token?

I'm more likely to win the prize for an essay entitled " How Not to Buy a Second Hand Car Assessed Through Modern Principles of Stupidity". I'm not bitter about buying a wreck at all.. honest!
The prize was supposed to be a month in Oman (?) being shown around the country/Armed Forces etc. There was a slight hoohaa when I won, as they had never considered what to do if a woman won the prize. Eventually they decided to give me £2000 and tell me to go on holiday to Egypt and write a report about it afterwards. Pretty good deal really, because no-one actually wanted to read the report, so I just had a month exploring Egypt.

Funniest part was doing the dress rehearsals for the Queens Parade. It was my turn for the solo march to the front, salute, step forward, hands out, award presented, kind words from the stunt double pretending to be HRH etc, and as she said something like "You must be so pleased" The Senior Officer standing behind said loudly "No, she was just the only bl**dy one in the year that didn't plagiarise".

Harsh, but fair I thought

As sad as it sounds, can I have a looksee
Well worth putting the effort in for a prize like that then

I'm sure when I was there it was a trip to Saudi. Not sure if I'd fancy that right now....

Edit: bah, this is Wzz. Logout faff.

Fraid it was written in pre-electronic days, not quite scratched on a wax tablet, but it was only ever produced in a pen and ink form! It was an easy formula though (given I had about 8 hours, overnight to write it) Make a list of the Principles of War, read a short guide to the Battle of Hastings, make a note of everytime one or other side did something in accordance with PoW, make sure Harald doesn't do as many right things as William, write an introduction extolling the virtues of the PoW (as just taught on IOT), then a short paragraph for each Principle, summarise, hand in, wait 18 months and see

Does everyone have to do this on IOT? I got decent History and English GCSE marks and my spelling and grammar is fairly sound, but I don't much rate my essay writing.
Reply 12
Yes you do. It's towards the end.

Cheers - at least I'm now going into the breach prepared!

An interesting title - how did you relate it to Air Power. I was distinctly under the impression that all RAF IOT Bandar Essays had to be air power based - didn't realise they had the Womens Royal Baloon Corps at the Battle of Hastings!

I think our only limitation was that it had to be on a military subject, certainly not limited to just Airpower. How many folks on an IOT course nowdays, 'cos I'd hate to be a Flt Cdr/Sqn Cdr having to read umpteen essays on Airpower?

Most courses up until a while ago ran at about 120.

You're right, it is indeed on a "defence related" subject.

Threeportdrift, would you mind dropping me a PM telling me what fleet you were on? I'm trying to locate a lost nav mate...!

Have done so Wzz, but I should point out that Navs don't get lost, they merely, on occasion, suffer from small geographical embarrassments.

    Sounds just like an old friend of mine who used to tell me.. "I'm not lost.. I know where I started out from, I know where I am going therefore I am not lost!!!!". Well I take back all I ever said about the MOD budget and book tokens.. good on you for the lateral approach and I'm sure you enjoyed the holiday.
