Calorie Counting/Weight Loss

I've come to the conclusion i need to lose weight (took me a while but hey i'm trying). As soon as i've worked out if i can afford it, i do intend to start going to the gym, so on the exercise front i have that covered. But i really need to restrict my diet more. I'm a very fussy eater so find it hard to survive on just grapefruit and salads, but i have started to think about calories instead.

As far as i know 2000 is the recommended daily amout for women. I was thinking of halving it so i would be on 1000 but feel this is still too much, so a comprimise would be a about 750. Then if i do lose weight i might graduially incerase it a bit.

What i want to know is, is this a realistic amount to try and live on? And would it cause any negative effects etc? Also will this help me lose weight??

Thanx

1000 is already not enough, even for a diet!

ok this is what it says in a book i have...

"The average woman needs about 2000 calories per day to maintain her current weight. However, if you want to lose weight it is advisable to reduce your calorie intake by 500-600 calories per day, but no more. If you calorie intake drops too low - to less than 1200 per day - you will simply encourage your body to become better at storing fat. So although you may lose weight initially, in the longer term you will put it all back on and more besides!"

1000 is way too low. 1500 is more realistic.

Really? But that doesn't seem like much of a reduction if you know what i mean? Is is really possible to lose weight if you're still consuming that many calories? (sorry i'm all confused etc)

Yeah. You can only safely loose 2lbs per week maximum with good dieting and exercise anyway.

As long as you don't go over the RECOMMENDED calorie intake, and do just some light exercise (walking) or have sex () you will lose weight. My gf lost about 2 stone last year, probably more.

yep. you said yourself that you are a fussy eater. do you really think you would be able to go down to 750-1000 calories per day? the lower the calories doesn't = more weight loss when it gets past a point.

Maybe you should just not bother wasting time counting your calories and just watch that paul mckenna thing on sky one (if you have sky of course)

If you work on the assumption that a pound is 3500 calories, if you cut down to 1200-1500 a day and excercise efficiently for half an hour a day you should safely lose nearly 2lb a week. You don't need to make drastic changes to your diet, maybe just switching to low sugar, low fat alternatives, like weetabix and semi skimmed milk for breakfast instead of toast and butter, or vegetable soup for lunch, and trying to snack mainly on fruit and veg. That way you can still have some of the things you like. When I'm trying to lose weight I just have half portions and substitute the other half with extra portions of fruit and veg.
