my dad has the paul mckenna book and CD cos he's into hypnotism n that.. i listened to the CD once and after that i stopped snacking so much.. i dunno whether it was that or just me that did it, but i think you need to listen more than once for it to have a permanent effect

The biggest piece of advice i can give anyone on a diet (I have tried and failed, and learned the hard way) is DONT GET OBSESSED !!!!

Counting calories is no way to live, and you find yourself thinking about food/calories/weight 24 hours a day. And even if you begin with the best of intentions you give up, because you are bored and fed up.

Also.. I found that another helping factor was that I kept my diet to myself. Talking about it gets you thinking about it, ect, also you feel more pressure to be hard on yourself because people expect to see you losing weight. especially when people ask you about it and are like.. "only 2 lbs??" The last thing you want is to be constantly reminded of your diet and have unnessesary pressure on you. That is a sure road to faildom. I promise.
At mealtimes I was just conciously healthy, and I only weighed myself once a fortnight. Also peoples reactions when they could see I was slimmer was so rewarding and encouraging !
I know it sounds a bit silly but I promise you that this was the ONLY way slimming worked for me.

Just think about your eating habbits at mealtimes, and forget about it for the rest of the day. Dont discuss it and DONT GET OBSESSED!!

Ok now I gave away my secret

hehe...good ideas little red sox...

i can recommend the GI diet - because it's not really a conscious diet - it's just healthier eating. i dont go around working out the GI value of everything - but i just cook things from the GI cookbook i have. Easy as (low fat) pie.

GI is crap and I've never succeeded on that.

I lost 2lbs last week and 2lbs this week on slimming world and have never felt hungry once.

Reply 24

it mightnt have worked for you but i wouldnt say it was crap, given the amount of people it has worked for.

you have to know your own body...i know that if i ate more than 1500 calories daily i would gain weight...i'm small, don't take much excersise and have a low metabolism. everybody is different.
i'm on a diet now and i'm trying to aim for 800-900 calories a day. this really isn't too hard if you eat the right things and i'm not finding that i am hungry at all...cut out alcohol, lots of vegetables, small amounts of carbs and protein. i am also keeping a food diary on my kitchen wall so i can calculate how many calories i eat per day.

if you want to count calories a really good resource is www.fitday.com if you space your meals out it gives you less hunger pangs and speeds up your metabolism, i also find if you cycle your calories it makes your body less likely to hold onto the fat eg.
1800
1600
1700
1500
1600
and then repeat from the beginning all depends on how high you start though. and drink 4 litres of water a day stops your body retaining water i know it sounds a lot but its worth it. anyhoo thats my two pence on the matter.

exactly. people generalise how many calories a person should have too often. there is no set amount, it differs a lot for every person. trial and error works.

everyone goes a woman is supposed to have 2000 cals a day and a man is supposed to have 2500 a day this is just plain wrong, these figures are for the "average" person and as pretty much no-one is "average" these figures don't apply, if people google maintenance calorie calculator or something on those lines they could be able to find a value more suited for them.

Atkins took the world by storm now it is acceptable to say it is crap.

I am just too stuck in my ways now on the diet I'm on. There's no room to think of GIs just of red and green days and free or synned food.

There is only one thing you need to look at for loosing weight, expend more calories than you intake. So really you could eat as much as you liked as long as you burnt more calories. Depending on your lifestyle different ranges could fit you style.

But scientists knew from the start (and anyone with a sense of reason) that it couldnt possibly be all that healthy, given it was cutting out one major food group.
GI has been proven for weightloss and other health aspects.

"red and green days and free or synned food" means nothing to me so its easier for me to stick with GI..which has more benefits than just losing weight.

1000 calories is IDEAL to begin with when you first go on a diet. Don't go below 1000 though.

If I ever put on some weight/jeans get tight etc this is how I alter my diet [it ALWAYS works for me]:

1. Cut out bread completely from my diet [bread is bloating, especially stodgy white varieties]
2. Try and cut down on dairy products or use skimmed milk whenever possible
3. Salads instead of sandwiches [sooo boring I know]
4. No mayonnaise/creamy dressings [try something like balsamic vinegar or make a healthy dressing with different oils etc]
5. Plenty of fish ie mackerel is good for omega etc
6. No eating after dinner on a night

Always works for me.

i don't believe in all the diets out there, it might work for some people but if you want to stay healthy it is better that you eat everything with moderation. that way you know that you are allowed to eat something and won't fall back in your old eating habits.

as for affording the gym thing maybe you should wait with that. start with eating right first (whatever diet you choose) so you get that right,(and under control) and can concentrate more. you will loose weight just by changing your diet. you can also walk everyday that is always good. then when you feel ready you can start the gym. if you haven't excercised regurlarly before you have to take it slow, so the body can adapt to the change and also so you won't feel that you can't handle it, find it boring and quit.

I would very much like to know the answer to that myself actually. alot of people say that an amount such as 750 calories isn't enough to live on and you apparently get really ill, however, there are hundereds of people that diet like that and they found it to be very effective. that is the kind of dieting i have tried and i lost weight fast and felt fine, the only problem is as soon as i stopped the diet all the weight came back. once your body gets used to that amount of food, your stomach will shrink and so you won't get hungary enough to eat like you used to. lets just say there are thousands of people who have dieted that way and found no problem with it.
