1000 calories is IDEAL to begin with when you first go on a diet. Don't go below 1000 though.

If I ever put on some weight/jeans get tight etc this is how I alter my diet [it ALWAYS works for me]:

1. Cut out bread completely from my diet [bread is bloating, especially stodgy white varieties]
2. Try and cut down on dairy products or use skimmed milk whenever possible
3. Salads instead of sandwiches [sooo boring I know]
4. No mayonnaise/creamy dressings [try something like balsamic vinegar or make a healthy dressing with different oils etc]
5. Plenty of fish ie mackerel is good for omega etc
6. No eating after dinner on a night

Always works for me.

BRILLIANT advice. This is what I'm doing right now. Porridge made with apple juice, soya yogurt, no bread etc.

Just don't go overboard. Once you start dieting and see results it can be sooooo easy to just keep shaving calories off, especially as your stomach shrinks and you feel less hungry.

Counting calories is so old-fashioned and not a good way of dieting.

Dont do anything extreme. When i went to the gym last year, i took it too far- burning 900 calories on the machines at one point, as well as majorly cutting down my food intake. The light headed feeling is deceptively easy to get addicted to, esp if your going through a bit of a vulnerable time. I know i was on the brink of an ed-not fun

I managed to loose 8 stone *proud* which I never thought I could do because I'd always been overweight. I was a size 22 and 16.5 stone which was massive because I'm only 5.3ft. I really had tried everything and the only way I could do it was by counting calories; no other diet worked for me at all. I managed to stick to between 900 and 1000 whilst walking to college everyday (about one and a half miles). I now eat normally again but healthily and only walk to college when I can be bothered but I haven't put any of it back on. It took me about a year and a half to do it but I never felt deprived as such. Good luck which ever way you decide to do it, you really don't get over the feeling! (I still buy size 22 clothes instead of a 10 or 8!)
