I will have one at grade 6 when I go (piano). I'm deferring entry so will have time to do the exam!

I'm hoping to just do grade 7 sax as well to prove that I can play it!

When I applied, I had a scraped grade 5 clarinet pass, grade 4 piano and grade 3 violin.

When I got offers I still had those grades.

When I went, I had, grade 6 piano, grade 6 clarinet, grade 8 sax merit, grade 1 flute and grade 3 violin.
hey everyone! my offers are:

Predicted grades: ABB/AAB/BBB or somewhere around there! who knows really!
Bristol: BBB
Manchester: AAA and grade 8 distinction
Edinburgh: BBB
Queens belfast: BC
Leeds: ABC
Cambridge: rejection! (elitist bastards!)
THe Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama: CC (had an audition)

I think there is was too much hype around the "grade 8" scenario in reply to pianist! as long as you are of that standard, musical and passionate, decent universities will want you. the grade system is way too competitive and in reality can equate for nothing in terms of interpretation, true musicality, performance and meaning. i had grade 8 clarinet when i applied (merit), grade 7 distinciton sax and grade 4 piano. I am hoping to get grade 8 disnction sax before i go, but for my own musical development not to validate my own ability.

Q: any ideas on which uni's are more performance based and have good jazz scenes?
Well, I'm going to be lazy I'm afraid! Slightly different in that I'm not doing pure music, but rather music and french.

My predicted grades are:
A - Music A2
A - French A2
A - English Lit. A2
A - History AS (already completed, not continuing with the subject)
A - Critical Thinking AS (to look forward to this year!)

...And my University choices are:

Bristol - offer, but unknown grades (1st choice)
King's - BBC
Royal Holloway - ABC
Birmingham - ABB
Southampton - BBC or 320 points (which would equate to CCD plus all my music exams...)
Cambridge - Rejection (for French and Italian - should've applied for Music dammit!)

Regarding the music exams, my first instrument is the harp, but I've only been learning for 3 years and am just about to take my grade 8. When I applied to all of my uni's they didn't seem to mind that I didn't have grade 8 on piano, harp or voice (incidentally, all 3 exams that I've since organised for later this term...yikes, I must be crazy!) - only grade 7 on harp, 7 on piano and nothing (yes, nothing!) for voice. I didn't even tell them that I was going to take any exams any time soon...

Despite this, I heard back from all my uni's really quickly, with really quite low grade requirements, so to be honest, as long as you're passionate about music, with a real willingness to learn, grade attainment is irrelevant...

Naturally, it could be an entirely different story for music colleges

But I'm sure someone will disagree with me over this! ;-)

i totally disagree. although i am no longer applying for music college (the flute is far to competitive for my liking. i also tend not to get on with flute players), grades are the only way to confirm standards. without a qualification, anyone can say they are "grade 8" standard. I know plenty of flute players who claim to be grade 8, but looking at the grade8 pieces will freak out. it would be like someone applying to medical school "claiming" to be AAB standard in their sciences...

apologies, but i am elitist when it comes to music

Sorry, I disagree!

Anyone really can get a grade 8 with certain amount of practice and dedication. I know so many people with a grade 8 who are nowhere near grade 8 standard. I passed grade 8 saxophone with merit after 10 months of playing, and I do not class myself as being grade 8 standard.

As for grades, I've got grade 8 viola distinction, 7 violin distinction, 6 piano distinction.

You undoubtedly have to be of a certain standard to get grade 8 distinction, but it certainly doesn't tell you everything about how good someone is at playing their instrument.

And beth - if you see this, are you organising your own visit to Nottingham or what?

Hello fatboy06, yes I am probably going up on the train to Nottingham or something. I can't remember the date I chose though...hopfully I'll get a letter reminding me!
Reply 17
and that's why there's pass, merit and distinction
disregard the exams completely and there is nothing to judge by
yeah once you've done your grade8 it doesnt seem THAT difficult/high, but that's the point you should be starting at if you go to study music. you are then worked at and improved. a teacher would have to put in much more time if you couldn't play/sightread the standard of pieces in industry. it's a realistic starting point
