Shops in Durham

Im going to Durham for uni this year, and i was just wondering what sort of shops there are there. When I went for an open day, there seemed to be a lot of boutique/independent style shops, and i didnt seem any sort of chain shops...

If anyone could help me out and tell me if any of these shops exist in Durham, i would really appreciate it!

New Look
Tesco
H&M
Primark (probably not in Durham, but is there one nearby?)
Ikea (where is the nearest one?)
Zara
WHSmith

ps, if anyone wants to know about any other shops, just say and I'll update the OP

Tesco and WHSmith are in Market Square, and I use both a lot.

Edit: quick Google searches tell me that the nearest Zara, Ikea, H&M and Primark are in Newcastle, probably Gateshead Shopping Centre. There is a New Look in Durham centre.

I remember seeing the following when I went up:

New Look
Tesco
Ikea (is in Gateshead, but it's only a bus ride)
WHsmith

I didn't see a H&M, Primark, or Zara. But remember, the MetroCentre is only a bus away, and it's the biggest shopping centre in the UK. I'm sure every single chain store you could possibly think of will have a branch there.

I get clothes shops confused a lot, but I'm pretty sure there's at least one of H&M or New Look in the same area (there are quite a few chain clothes shops).
Not aware of there being Primark in the centre, Ikea will be a lot further out if it exists, and I've never heard of Zara. :s-smilie:

Most, if not all, of these shops have a store locator on their website. So you can go to the website, input DH1 as a postcode (or, if it requries a full location, use DH1 3EE or just "Durham") and it'll tell you. A quick s earch on Primark, for example, comes up with Sunderland, Newcastle city centre, MetroCentre, Darlington, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough as the stores in the region. All very accessible by bus. Newcasltle and Darlington accessible by direct train services.

All of those will either be in Durham and, if not, the MetroCentre (which will probably have everything you need) and Newcastle.

The only IKEA in the north east is at the MetroCentre (well, it's the surrounding retail park techincally). So 20 miles away or so. But there are plenty of direct buses. IKEA Gateshead is one of the largest and oldest in the UK though.

There is a new Tesco Metro at the market place, as well as a large Tesco Extra (the large hypermarkets) in Dragonville. About 10 - 20 minutes walk from Gilesgate, or a quick bus journey from the city centre. The 20 Durham-Sunderland being the most regular service that goes past the large Tesco. Runs as regularly as every 8 - 10 minutes.

WHSmith is, as already mentioned, in the MArket Square directly in the city centre. It's not particularly large though.

H&M, Primark etc are all in Newcastle and the Metro Centre. The metro centre is a 30/40 minute bus ride away from Durham; Newcastle is 8-10 minutes by train. There's a small/medium sized Topshop, River Island, Fat Face, Dorothy Perkins and a couple of other clothes shops in Durham.

Newcastle isn't too far away, and its has pretty much all of the high street shops. There isn't much in Durham.

Hi, we have a New Look, Tesco and WHSmith. The others would all be in Newcastle/Metrocentre which you can get to by a very short train.
