Cambridge College Stereotypes

I was just wondering how different people in cambridge view people at different colleges at cambridge. Like, what stereotype does each college have?
Reason I'm asking is just cos I got an offer from a college i didn't apply to (prepool) and know little about it, and one of the first things i was told by a girl I know (who happened to have got rejected) is that other cambridgers will think that I'm stupid and not really "cambridge material" (wherever that means).
So it got me thinking what are the stereotypes of different colleges in cambridge and how true are they?

If this sounds odd, just ignore it, lol

(College I got an offer from was Homerton, btw)

There will always be those who turn their noses up at others; going to a college which receives a large number of open apps/poolees is just an excuse for them. Thankfully, they're quite few and far between.

Yeah, she's talking crap, there is a bit of banter due to it being a bit out of the centre (there is a free bus the town centre, though) and it is the "education studies" college, meaning a lot are becoming teachers, and the entry requirement is lower for ed. stud. than any other course (I'm NOT slagging it off). Ignore her, accept, and best of luck!
I SO thought you were referring to me with the "talking crap" comment. Phew! :p:

Now we've quelled your fears can we hijack the thread and fill it with banter about every college? I think untrue stereotypes are best

Li, no, OP's "friend"

What are the stereotypes for each college anyways? All I've heard is that King's is full of communists, lol
Peterhouse has a rep for being homosexual.
Christs for being an academic hothouse
Churchill - full of compscis

anything else? Mind is blank.

I'm starting to get a bit worried about this. I know the college itself and all of the professor people are meant to be very... 'left wing', and I know about the flag in the bar and stuff, but it's not taken too seriously is it? I mean I had hoped that the students just see it as a bit of fun really, I don't need to start pledging allegiance to the motherland when I get there do I?

Ok, here are the stereotypes. Most of which are untrue (except for John's)

Christ's College - very academic. Students work hard
Churchill College - Full of scientists/geeks. Quite laid back
Clare College - Full of musicians
Corpus Christi College - small and posh
Downing College - right wing, full of lawyers
Emmanuel College - lovely
Fitzwilliam College - laid back (like all hill colleges)
Girton College - full of fit people who like cycling
Gonville and Caius College - snooty
Homerton College - full of teachers
Jesus College - sporty
King's College - lefty
Magdalene College - Posh, right-wing
New Hall - full of virgins
Newnham College - full of feminists and lesbians
Pembroke College - dunno
Peterhouse - full of gay tories
Queens' College - happy
Robinson College - apathetic and blind
St Catharine's College - **** know's
St John's College - worse than oxford
Selwyn College - their bar is white, need I say more?
Sidney Sussex College - friendly students
Trinity College - big, full of mathmos
Trinity Hall - not trinity

Well I think maybe they got rid of the actual flag, but I definitely saw a framed picture of an old USSR flag up on the wall, same thing really.
I must have missed that picture,
Am I completely niave? because ive vistited the college a couple of times, and yes i got its left wing, but not as communist as everyone is saying.

You should've seen the room I had to wait in for my interview. Very scary.

No, it's not really that left wing. There are a few marxists about, but unfortunately there are relatively few of us in Cambridge

stereotypes are also included in the "Choosing a college" thread: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/t100713.html
I've heard Sidney students are meant to be quite alcoholic ... I'll fit right in.

Trinity: not Johns
Well, perhaps the best way of summing up all this is to say that the stereotypes are not really true. Any college you go to will have a friendly and welcomming atmousphere, be it St. Catz, St. Johns or whereever. The seterotypes, as someone said above, really are no maore than banter and jokes, to be bought up at Bumps races, inter-college sporting events, and occasionally around town- such as going back past John's early in teh morning and singing the song.

Some of the college's reputations are justified, though. I was at a random gathering in someone's room (less than 10 people so not a party according to college rules!) and, of the nine people there, seven played an instrument and at least two played more than one instrument. And there was me sitting in teh corner, being unable to play anything at all...

Seriously, it does not amtter if you do not fit the stereotype of the college. They may have a reputation for it, and there may seem to be a lot of abuse and aggro about, but it is all good natured. Apart from that directed at John's.
