A couple of points, from what I remember of my troubled English Lit days..

He has a great deal of knowledge, but hasn't used it to succeed. Along with Hugh, he represents the wasted potential of Ireland. It is also telling that he speaks Latin and Greek, in addition to Irish/Gaelic, but doesn't seem to have a word of English.
He seems to prefer living in the past to the present, using his knowledge of Greek classics to aid in his escapist fantasy. This represents an abuse of knowledge.
