Perfectly possible they're connected - the epithelium of your throat is very sensitive and easily damaged, which would result in soreness. Plus it's very easy to get infections there (even if it's just Candida, not HIV or anything!).

As for doing it again, tell him that you feel crappy today and it's not something you want to do on a regular basis. Give yourself a chance to recover before trying it again.
