It entirely depends what sort of level you're working at.

At my school it was aimed at those students working around a C grade. If you're around that level you'll find it challenging, as you will with any subject.

However, if you're particularly higher than that level, you'll probably find it fairly easy, and would probably be better off doing a GCSE in IT.

I'm not going to do it, one of my friends is. I thought it might me hard like having to be able to code stuff. Is GCSE IT more demanding?

I'd say my course is more demanding. My mate did GCSE IT and said it was really easy. I'm doing AVCE ICT and it can be both differcult and easy.

I'd say so, from my experience of friends who have completed both courses (although I've done neither).

AFAIK, coding isn't a part of the syllabus. It's more based around website design (using FrontPage rather than straight HTML coding) and databases with Access.

AVCE is a relatively more intense course though, surely?

You do AVCE in sixth form, right? I thought a GNVQ was higher than a GCSE, but it seems not to be?! Is an AVCE harder than a GNVQ? I thought that my friend might find it too difficult and seen as she doesn't particually love computers my find it annoying, but I don't know.

I just had a thought... aren't GNVQs being withdrawn in 2005?

Are they? My sixth form still offers them for september... I don't even think they do AVCE's...

Well yes, that'll still be 2004.

However, if in the future your friend is competing for a job against a number of people a couple of years younger than him/her, then he/she'll have an outdated qualification of sorts.

There's no logical reason why it should go against him/her, presuming of course he/she gets an equivalent grade but it may just put some employers off, simply on account of them not being knowledgeable enough to be aware of equivalence between the two qualifications.

What my tutor told me, is that the AVCE is working towards replacing the GNVQ.

That's pretty shocking!!!!!!! Is it all GNVQ's? I'm not actually planning on doing one but I know people who are...

This is off the subject but do you ever feel that you're stupid? I kind of do, I guess I have low confidence...

Also would you recommend having some qualification in IT just to prove that yo ucan use a computer and do whatever on it, or do employers not care just as long as you can use a computer confidently?

Sorry for all the questions.

You know you said you're doing an AVCE, you just do one right? Not several like A-Levels? So if you do an AVCE or GNVQ you just do that subject?

Just to back some things up...

I thought a GNVQ was higher than a GCSE, but it seems not to be?!

Level 1 - the foundation level and equivalent to GCSE (Grades D and E) and GNVQ Level 1.

Level 2 - intermediate level and equivalent to GCSE (Grades A* to C) and GNVQ Level 2.

Level 3 - advanced level and equivalent to GCE Advanced Level and GNVQ Level 3.

Level 4 - higher level qualifications equivalent to Higher National Diplomas and Bachelors Degrees.

Level 5 - higher level qualifications, such as a Masters degrees.

CLAIT is fairly widely accepted IT qualification, if the intention is just to display proficiency.

Thanks Alec. Now I sort of know what's going on

GNVQ Intermediate ICT is much harder than the GCSE. GNVQ IT is supposed to be the same as 5 GCSEs at grade C. I would say its more like 3 GCSES. I believe the course requires 6 hours a week teaching over two years.

I would say its better to do 3 extra GCSEs rather than GNVQ Intermediate.

I really don't know... I was trying to find out stuff for my friend, she doesn't really know what she wants to do...
