Errr yeah, maybe I'm being a little harsh on Trinity because the people from there can be lovely , but the impression I get is that most people wouldn't like to study there because it's too big etc.
I really gave the New* colleges high ratings because they have nice people too, however, I suspect New Hall should be lower than Trinity thinking about it. Not entirely sure about Newnham though...( cue Foolfarian telling me I'm wrong )

10 doesn't do justice to Trinity colleges reputation externally, it's prestige is probably similar to all the other colleges combined, with the exception of Kings.

I don't feel like I really know enough about them all (that's not based on personal preferences or hearsay) to make one.

Well... surely that makes you an ideal person to rate their relative prestige. After all, prestige is not about objective measures of reputation; it is completely subjective, and based not on knowledge but rather on perception.

Oh I'm sorry, giving them a perfect score isn't good enough

Although once you get past the top ten, prestige is a useless concept - Id never heard of Lucy Cavendish and Clare Hall, so I put them last. Also, its difficult to argue that, say, Darwin is better than Wolfson when I know nothing about either. With the top ten, though, prestige is easier to measure.

Hmm... thanks for that, sjoshi. Do you think you could give each one a numerical score, though, preferably out of ten. Otherwise, I will give each one a score directly proportional to it's position on your list, which may not be at all what you intended.

Anyone else care to contribute?

Over here (Japan) the only colleges that people have heard of (that's IF they have even heard of Cambridge University) are Trinity and Kings. I don't think the 'general population' outside of the UK know of any others, unless they've had direct experience with them.
Internal reputation (rated out of 10)+ Prestige (A-E)
Judged by 5 Cambridge Students from Trinity, Caius, Clare and Magdalene:

Christ's College 8B only parts of college nice
Churchill College 4.5C famous for sciences.... ugly buildings
Clare College 8B (small but pretty)
Clare Hall 1E (where is this college?)
Corpus Christi College 7B (nice.. but ..)
Darwin College 2E (...)
Downing College 7B (quite nice grounds)
Emmanuel College 10B (Academic top)
Fitzwilliam College 1E (far, ugly buildings too....)
Girton College 2D (far, nice buildings tho)
Gonville and Caius College 6.5C (some parts r v.pretty..but some other..)
Homerton College 5B/C (or 10A in education -got nobel prize winner) interesting one.. impression - new, but actually it's been around 4 200 yrs got gothic buildings + towers.
Hughes Hall 1E (not too sure, sorry if harsh)
Jesus College 7.5C (fun college)
King's College 9A (magnificent chapel, but broke)
Lucy Cavendish 1E (not sure)
Magdalene College 7.5B (small, but cute. not grand tho, unlike the oxford magdalene. sorry dan!)
New Hall 1E (womens only..the least popular cam college)
Newnham College 4B (Famous female alumni)
Pembroke College 8A (nice grounds, quite isolated tho..)
Peterhouse 2B (prestige solely because it's the oldest college, otherwise not so good)
Queens' College 8B/A (mathematical bridge, but ugly new buildings)
Robinson College 3D (new, red brick, like a polytechnic)
St Catharine's College 6B/C (cute, sweet college)
St Edmund's College 2E (don't know)
St John's College 8.5A (nice, but always compared to trinity as inferior)
Selwyn College 5C (alright, nothing special)
Sidney Sussex College 7B/C (7 coz opposite sainsbury's)
Trinity College 9A (everyone knows trinity.academic, grand + v.v.rich)
Trinity Hall 6.5B (ppl always think this is a copy of trinity, but it's not)

For emmanuel college you write 'academic top'. Does this mean they tend to get the best results overall, or that they have good supervisors? Also, do you know emmas rep for sciences, esp maths?

They're top of the Tompkins table this year, which means they technically got the best results overall.

They have a very good reputation overall, and the tutors seemed very nice, as well as coming top of the Tompkins table this year (and were second or third last year also)

Here is the latest ranking, incorporating the contributions of Edwardbrooks and Sjoshi. Trinity is clearly ahead, followed by John's and Kings, which are neck-and-neck. The latter has risen from its initially low ranking. The various rankings contributed by various posters were strongly correlated, with an overall correlation coefficient of r = 0.8:

Trinity College
St John's College
King's College
Emmanuel College
Gonville and Caius College
Pembroke College
Queens' College
Christ's College
Magdalene College
Jesus College
Clare College
Downing College
Trinity Hall
Peterhouse
Sidney Sussex College
Corpus Christi College
St Catharine's College
Selwyn College
Newnham College
Churchill College
Girton College
Robinson College
Homerton College
Fitzwilliam College
New Hall
Darwin College
Wolfson College
Lucy Cavendish
St Edmund's College
Clare Hall
Hughes Hall

Is this the prestige or internal reputation ranking, Radagasty?
Reply 133
Is it really possible or desirable to rank the colleges one by one? Perhaps you could simply group them together according to their relative reputations.

Perhaps it would be fair to have three groups, with each college being roughly equivalent to each other.

1: Trinity, St. John's, Emmanuel, Gonville & Caius, Pembroke, Queen's, King's, Clare

2: Downing, Christ's, CCC, Jesus, Magdalene, St. Catz

3: The rest

Personally, though, I don't really see the merit in comparing colleges, or letting their reputations influence applications.

i don't think it's fair to group colleges together, although i admit it's hard to rank colleges one by one especially at the botton of the league. e.g. is newhall better than fitzwilliam etc.
As a stupid american who didn't know better - I checked the little 'I'm too lazy to choose a college' box so now I got admitted to Christ's College. A question for you locals - does it suck? Btw, I'm pursuing a PhD, if that makes a difference.....

Hey there, I'm a first year at Christ's college. I don't think the college you are at matters as much for postgrads but in general Christ's has the best academic reputation amongst all the colleges. Don't know much about the MCR (that's the student organisation at Christ's which looks after postgrads) but they organise several events throughout the year. If you are in college, food is OK and quite inexpensive and the accomodation is pretty decent. What are you studying?

i study engineering, another nerd.... but a female nerd :P maybe it was the nerdy factor that i got put into christ's.

i'm not too sure if i'll end up there, since I do have a few options... cambridge, princeton and yale...
