White Trash on Coronation Street

Who watched corrie last night?

CORONATION Street sparked outrage last night when Asian Sunita was accused of “living like white trash”.

Do you think that this was an acceptable comment?

Just imagine if the boot was on other foot

They (producers of corrie not Asians cast members) are trying to say that White single parents are 'White Trash'

What do others on here think?

I have referred to people as white trash before when hearing/reading racist comments from white people etc.

However Coronation Street is just the lowest of the LOW! I maintain that people who watch it have no life of their own. The same applies to EastEnders, which IMHO is even worse.

I think it's a bad move because it makes Asians out to be racist. It was a stupid decision. But this is an even stupider poll. The poll question is not specific and whatever the result is, cannot reflecr the example you give.

its probably not the best move by itv.

isnt the original poster the one normally complaining about political correctness?

for those of you wondering what "white trash" means:definition

The more regular visitors to this forum will know I'm passionate in highlighting the discrepancy between the acknowledgement of anti-black and anti-white racism. However, I think it's important to remember here that it's a soap opera and if it's realistic that the character who said 'white trash' would say it were they real, then it's fine. I saw it and it seems entirely appropriate given the personality of the character involved. To be honest, I heard it but it didn't seem objectionable to me.

As I've always said, we should be sensible about these things. If someone says 'white trash' in a deliberately offensive way, then fine, be offended. If they say it in the context of a joke, then I wouldn't mind at all. We need to start behaving like intelligent human beings with things like this. I think in soap operas (and TV shows in general) we should be more realistic and accept that characters, if real people, might be racist instead of having a rose-tinted view of how life is.

I'm not sure it does. It makes the character seem like an arrogant snob, which he is, I don't see how one could extrapolate from the character to all Asians. Remember that the other character (Sunita) was berrating him for using the term, so it was balanced. Anyway, we should all relax a bit, it's only a soap opera!!!!

Neighbours is awesome!!!!!!

Back to the point, the phrase White Trash back home in the US implies the same thing that calling someone a Pikey or Chav does. I personally have no problem with it. It is a class based insult, not one to do with race.

Have you heard it used to describe blacks?

Actually, yes. I have heard it used to describe Hispanics too.

I have aswell. Plus I don't believe it actually sparked an 'outrage' since that would imply a large amount of people actually watched the program

This is great publicity for the show, and myabe that's what the writer wanted.

p.s I see a pattern in his threads

People are far too sensitive these days, it's a term that conjours up images of Britney Spears, the deep south of America and hicks. I don't think it should be interpreted so literally - the BNP looks stupid ranting about it.

it doesn't make out all Asians to be racist, but i think it's misguided of people to assume that they are not or can not be racist. i've met loads of racist Asians, that is to say Indians, Pakistanis, and Chinese.

you a bnp member or summat?

No, personally, I don't reckon it should've been said because just seems a little racist. y'know if it've been the other way round there'd be absolute uproar.
