Mountview - Professional and character reference...???

Hellooo!

I've just received a letter from Mountview Academy Of Theatre Arts. I've applied for their acting course through UCAS but they still want me to fill out an application form and return it to them. Anyway, I am a little bit confused about their referee request. They want me to name a professional and a character reference.

What exactly does this mean? Is my English teacher a professional reference? And who is a character reference? A friend of mine? It says that it mustn't be a member of my family.
