Hey  Belt and line transects are used to show the distribution of species across an area of land e.g. from the shore to sand dunes. Both make use of string or measuring tape to mark out a line (transect) along the area of land that is being studied.

For a line transect all of the species that are present on the line are recorded. For a belt transect two lines are used and all the species that are present in between both lines are recorded. For an interrupted belt transect quadrats are placed at certain intervals along the line and all of the species that are present in each quadrat are recorded. It is 'interrupted' because quadrats are not placed all the way along the line, only at particular intervals. Hope this helped

i got this from a question paperThe cleared rainforest is used to grow crops. (d) Describe a sampling method, using a quadrat, which could be used to investigate the
effect the distance from the remaining rainforest has on the population of weeds in the
crop field. and the answer includes this from the mark scheme A description to include three of the
following ideas:
quadrat (of known
dimensions)
belt transect/placed along
line at right-angles to
rainforest
interrupted belt transect
described correctly
identification of
species/weeds
numbers of each recorded
mention of repeats
average
credit reasonable figures used
eg every 1 metre from
rainforest
