Starting the pill

OK, so I've had a bit of a browse through previous threads but I can't find an answer. Question is, I just got my doctor to prescribe me the pill and I'm seeing my boyfriend on the 30th, coming home from uni. The doctor told me it's probably best to start taking it on the first day of my period which is due on the 27th, although I can start it now if I want. The question is, when I start taking it, will I keep having my period as normal or will it stop it? Because I obviously don't want to be on when I see him...

If not, any ideas for getting round this problem?

yeah think you will be. the pill doesnt stop your periods it just regulates them more and stops the ovaries from releasing an egg amongst other things dependent on the combonation your on

So if I started taking it now, could I keep taking it over that weekend and then have it afterwards, if that makes sense, when I take the break?

If you started it on the first day of your period then you would still have your period. If you started taking it right now, then had your break at the end of the pack, you might be able to delay your period but seeing as you're currently halfway through a hormonal cycle, I don't know if you'd get the required suppression in time. Just remember if you do start now it's not effective as a contraceptive for 7 days.

to be honest im not entirely sure. it would be a hell of a lot easier to take it at the start of your period, although i can see why you wouldnt want to be on your period whn your boyfriend visits. how long do u periods tend to last for because it looks like you have a couple of days before ur bf comes bak

Is the pill used so you can have sex without a condom, basically?

Yeah, I'm not liely to be sleeping with anyone but him though, and since I won't see him until the 30th I may as well give it a shot - thanks people.

Oh, and love_hearts, my periods are always a decent 5 days so there's no chance of it being over...

It's worth a try, and the contraceptive action will be effective by then so should be ok. You might get breakthrough bleeding but there's not much you can do if that does happen.

I started half way through a cycle and my period didn't come til I took the week break. iI'm guessing you might be ok, the only way to try it and see! if you wait for your period you're gonna be on when you see him anyway, so you've got nothing to lose!

You can take tablets that delay menstruation, but I don't think you'd be able to start your pill tablets for a while if you did that (you'd have to ask your doctor though). They have to be prescribed as well, so I don't know how easy it'd be to explain! I got them because I was going on a watersports holiday - you start taking them three days before your period is due, two or three times a day. Surprisingly easy to keep up - I am extremely forgetful - because if you miss one, it's not the end of the world. I'd recommend them to anyone really!

P.S. They're 'Norethisterone' tablets - the brand I've had is called Ovlan (as far as I remember). You can't buy them from a pharmacy though.
