Peterhouse

Hey! I was pooled to Peterhouse about 2 weeks ago, and i don't really know much about it so I was wondering if anyone was there or knew what it's like. I've read the prospectus and the alternative prospectus and stuff, but any information on the general atmosphere of the place, on accomodation, on music facilities, on societies etc would be very much appreciated! Especially if anyone is there or is going there to do languages - I'm doing MML French and Spanish. x x x

There's a thread of applicants knocking about somewhere, but it seems to have got lost in the general milieu.

My extensive research has established that its old, small, and that the JCR has a rather amusing name. And its quite small and unobtrusive architecturally - I nearly walked past it when I first arrived for my interviews.

Peterhouse is great  atmosphere is very friendly and as it so small you get to know everyone quite quickly, which makes it easier to settle in  accomodation is really good, first years go in either houses of 9-12 people in big swanky georgian town houses with large rooms or a not-overly-attractive building (nicknamed azkaban, but don't let that put you off :p: ) which is fine on the inside and has the benefits of sinks in each room plus a lift. In my house there's 9 of us, 2 small kitchens, 2 showers and 3 toilets; doesn't sound much compared to some other colleges but it really doesn't cause an issue sharing with people. With regards to music there's a music room which is available for rehearsals and lessons, the chapel choir and an orchestra. For such a small college we have a fair few societies, the most important being the neighbours society  We also have the usual music, drama, history, science ones as well as sports clubs, and a really good politics society too; the speakers for this are invariably conservative, but always high class. Ignore any gay tory public-school boy stereotypes you may hear; I'm a straight female from a bog-standard comp and I fit in fine  I will make you row when you get her though :p: PM me if you want to know any more

I don't go to Peterhouse, but I was over there on Sunday night and was thoroughly impressed with the place. Extremely friendly and welcoming people, nice bar (tad expensive) and a great JCR with free pool and dart board. Scarf isn't too shabby, either.

I'd chalk the pooling up as a definite success (unless it was from Sidney Sussex of course :P). Where did you apply to originally?

I have a question; How easy is it to get involved in the drama society (i.e. acting)? And do the first year medics have enough time to row and be involved in something else (which I want to do)?

Clare. I loved that college so much! But Peterhouse sounds great, so I couldn't really be happier with the outcome! Does the college have a grand piano that you can play?

No. I'd say it was pretty similar to the other colleges.

lol i cant help but laugh at the old 'gay college' thing. Poor old peterhouse. I do hear that they like to give freshers a thorough sodomizing upon arrival though. Whether this is due to genuine homosexuality or simply a mechanism to 'break their spirit,' in the finest Etonian and Harruvian traditions, remains unknown.

:p: alas, the old society where the fellows would have their wicked way with the innocent wee freshers no longer exists. Having said that, my friend was hit on by a fellow at Matric. dinner  the 'gay thing' comes far more from the fellows than the students

Lol, with hindsight i would have applied to peterhouse. I have seen met some really, *really* buff girls from there, and if the lads are all gay (as goes the legend) then the competition is reduced...

Quite a coincidence you applied to Clare as there's someone in my year who was also pooled (NatSci) from there. One of my old school mates actually goes to Clare but is always coming to Peterhouse as it's where it's happening!

There is indeed a grand piano in the music room which you have to book to use. If you've got any other questions just post or PM, there's a few TSR Petreans around (I met 3 out of 8 housmates through TSR before I arrived, quite strange!).

Not any old friend either seeing as he is your husband, to distinguish him from your wife who you can't marry because he's your brother!

Don't you just love college families...

Yeah, this makes me laugh too. When I told them I was applying to Peterhouse, my mum and my TOK teacher (they both went to Cambridge ~30 years ago) told me that.

Michael Portillo went there. 'Nuff said.

Apparently in reality its generally politically apathetic, but then from what I hear pretty much everywhere is.
There's not really much point in trotting out the alumni; for every Michael Portillo or Michael Howard, there's a Sam Mendes or Colin Greenwood (bassist of Radiohead).

And yes, you get a mix of all views once you're here, but I'd definitely describe the overriding mood as apathetic, and very irreverent. It's great.
