    I need your help :/
ive just bought the original sims and a few expansion packs, not knowing that it isnt compatible with vista

When i try and load it, it says "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item."

If its helps, i have a Dell XPS M1530

Is there any way of getting it to run on vista?

    I really appreciate your advice

Step 1: Right Click on your "The Sims" icon.
Step 2: Select "Run as administrator."
Step 3: The User Account Panel will open. Select "Allow."
    Step 4: Play the Game.

Now, to set this setting permanently, you may do the following:

Step 1: Right Click on your "The Sims" icon.
    Step 2: Select "Properties."
Step 3: Select the "Compatibility" tab.
Step 4: Select the "Run this program as an administrator" check box under "Privilege level."
Step 5: Press "Apply" or "OK."
    Step 6: Play the Game.

There's no need to bump your thread after ten minutes. Even H&R doesn't move that quickly, and in here it'd be normally be 1-2 days before a thread would slip off the first page.

Where was the icon you were right-clicking? In the start menu or something? Find the game's installation folder in C:\Program Files (I can't remember for the life of me what it'd be under by default but logical guesses would be "The Sims", "Maxis" or "EA Games") and find the .exe file in there to run the game. Right-click on THAT and 'run as administrator' should definitely be there, second from the top.

Knowing the issue was with your disk drive would have helped :p:

http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-...le-cd-rom.html should hopefully help (I know it's Win7 but the tabs and stuff are all there on Vista too)

Try some other discs, see if it's only happening with Sims or if it's happening with others as well

ok, is there a shortcut for the game on your desktop anywhere?
    If there is:-

    1) rightclick that shortcut,
    then click run as administrator
A message will pop up, click accept or ok

    2) If there is no shortcut anywhere:-
    open my computer
right click the cd drive that has the game disk in
    click Explore
navigate your way through the folders on the cd and try to find "setup.exe"
    rightclick that shortcut,
    then click run as administrator
A message will pop up, click accept or ok

Should work then. If it does, it will add a shortcut on your desktop, follow the run as admin instructions above

Since I suspect this is more of a technical rather than gaming-specific query, I've moved this across to general tech

Create a shortcut on your desktop, then right click - properties - compatibility - then tick 'run this program in compatibility mode for:'

Then you can choose the Windows version. Choose XP or 98/ME.

You sure you navigated through every folder on the cd? It has to be there since windows already detected setup.exe on that screenshot your provided.

If you could print screen the folders on the CD, i might be able to help more
