To be a psychiatrist, you must first train to be a doctor, then specialise.

If you mean psychiatrist, then as above, you have to study a degree in medicine and then specialise after that. If you mean a clinical psychologist, then you would need a degree in psychology first. If you mean just a counsellor (which I guess you probably do?) then I'm not totally sure, so sorry :unsure:

You would do a postgraduate course in Counselling.

OP, look at postgraduate courses that include mental health. There used to be such a course that meant you would be a mental health practitioner at the end, but I think they've cut it, or it may be called something else. There are courses in psychotherapy, but it takes about four years to complete and the last two years are clinical placements. You also have to be prepared to undertake therapy yourself as part of the course, i.e. you are the patient.
