'Crash' diet

I have a big party in late Feb and basically want to lose some weight before then so I can fit into the dress I'm going to buy. I'm quite happy with my figure, its just that the figure doesn't fit into the dress (vintage, no other size).

To that end, I've started a diet based on calorie counting and eating very healthily. I am eating lots of fresh veg, some bread, protein in form of eggs and fish. Also taking a multivitamin every day to keep up potassium, magnesium etc. No 'proper' exercise just walking briskly from home to school (about a mile) and back again.

Is there anything that I am missing/ anything I should do to keep healthy? I want to lose weight but don't want to sacrifice my health.

Aware that this is pretty much a crash diet and that when I stop the weight will come back. I plan to continue eating healthily (but not so regimented) so hopefully will keep some of the weight off.

Does anyone have any advice about health/ any other ideas?

Edit: I know that this seems like a silly, shallow reason to lose weight but there is weight to lose and I am not starving myself.

You need lots of fibre to make you feel full  Things like wholegrains, e.g. always have wholegrain bread and pasta instead of while alternatives. Also remember to drinnk 8 glasses of water a day to flush out toxins and give you a lovely glow  Enjoy your party!

When I've needed to lose weight for martial arts things, I just dont eat for about 3 days. Drink plenty of fluids, water, and about 1 1/2 pints of milk for breakfast, lunch and tea.
Dont exercise or anything too strenuous, as you will feel feint!
Be warned, this isnt healthy, but it does let you drop about 8 lbs in three days.
Only use in an emergency

The Atkins diet is good for a quick weight loss although its not very healthy. My mother lost a stone in two weeks on it.

If, for some reason, the diet crashes and burns, I might try this. I'd rather not but in a pinch, probably would. Thanks. The things I'll do for fashion...

Thanks Twiga - I'm eating small slices of wholemeal bread (42 kcal per slice) which is working well.

Chickadee - apparently Atkins makes your breath smell?! Ew. But that's a lot of weight.

How many calories are you eating a day in order to lose this weight?

Fibre isn't classed as a nutrient because it's not absorbed during digestion, but it makes you feel full  Snack on fruit as that's also a source of fibre, and whatever you do don't skip breakfast! Have something like porridge made with skimmed milk (another good fiberous meal!) which should fill you up until lunchtime

Your body can actually obtain some energy from fibre, in the region of 1-2kcals/g.

Hmm I thought the function of fibre was to "keep things moving" and provide bulk to the faeces preventing constipation

You're probbably right though

i have been eating an average of 950 calories a day and keeping a food diary for the past three weeks and i have lost just under half a stone. i have been taking vitamins and eating only healthy organic foods- salmon, salad leaves, boiled eggs, vegetables, avocado, wholemeal bread etc and i feel fantasically healthy. you should be fine as long as you are sensible.

Mata, cutting out carbs is the fastest way to lose weight. Combine this with walking everywhere and you will lose a lot of weight. You don't even have to cut it completely out, I had a small portions of rice, pasta, or potatoes about three times a week and between september and november lost just under a stone.

I'm only on day 4 of mine, but believe me, its the longest I've ever gone on a diet without wanting to kill myself. I feel really good so far. Never realised how many low-calorie products there were out there! The first day, I felt starved but I think I've adjusted as now I function perfectly well on less food (in fact today I was worried that I wasn't feeling hungry, heh). Mostly, I'm eating large salads with tuna or scrambled egg-white for lunch, sugarless jelly (I need jelly) and weightwatchers soup with low-cal bread and some veg for dinner. Like you, I have a food diary which works really well.

You're right, cutting carbs would be a great idea. Unfortunately, I'm addicted to bread. I have 3-4 very small slices of wholemeal per day. But I don't eat pasta, rice or potatoes and my calorie input is very low, so I still anticipate some weight loss. Well done for the weight loss, that's a lot
