Anyone who is willing to do harm to another because of their belief should not be allowed the luxury of believing in anything.

So religion is fine then just so long as it's not mixed with psychosis leading to violent reactions to your delusions?

As much as I hate to break it to you psychology isn't yet at the stage where we can competently tell who's going to develop illness to deprive them of all belief (which sounds disturbingly totalitarian at any rate).

No, perfectly sane people can hurt people due to their beliefs as well. Ultimately there is nothing anyone can do unless it's completely abolished.

So belief as a whole should be simply removed from the human consciousness then? No opinions, no views, no nothing? The safest way no doubt...

So long as your belief does not condemn others who do not believe as you do. Also, so long as you and the followers of your belief are treated no different for those who do not believe.

The women was clearly mental, and nowhere in the Quran does it mention that we have to sacrifice children, infact, Allah saved a child who was about to be sacrificed by making the blade floppy and ineffective. Are you really this pathetic? Actually find something productive to do with your time. Do you really think these stories, that have nothing to do with Islam, is going to make a muslim abandon his/her religion? Of course not, so I can only assume this is just something for you and your non-muslim buddies to laugh at and get a kick out of, while the rest of us get on with our lives.

So then presumably you wouldn't be able to hold the belief you're here advertising under your system. To stop people believing something requires thought crimes and segragation or "reformative" treatment until they stop holding any beliefs that you deem dangerous or likely to cause them to discriminate.

In any case you seem to be contentedly condemning the beliefs of others as immoral (obviously in the case highlighted in the thread the results are rather more tragic, but this is a matter of mental instability, not belief) or you would not be saying that people could not hold them.

Err, yes, why not?

Opinions, views and beliefs are completely and utterly valueless if they have no basis in evidence, so what's the point in having them?

Having all these unsupported opinions flying about only seeks to confuse people who are not trained in the scientific method, and leads people to assume undue power and control over a particular issue.

If you're going to act on somebody's baseless opinion, you might as well flip a coin to make all your decisions.

That doesn't sound like a particularly good life.

The scientific method is designed to describe not prescribe moral issues. In any case, there are very few Christians who are aware they believe in the face of evidence. For the most part they believe because they find the evidence for Christianity compelling. In any case, I never mentioned baseless belief, we were discussing the concept of belief as a whole.

Sounds great to me. Means our government and it's policy wouldn't be decided on the basis of somebody's opinion, but on the merits of the arguments behind the positions. It would mean people wouldn't disagree for the sake of disagreement, and there would be unity between people, because once they've seen the evidence, they'll unanimously accept it.

This is how science works, so why can't we have the same thing in politics, and society in general?

The evidence is inconclusive, always. Politicians aren't contrary just for the sake of it (well, not always  , indeed the entire British political system (and most representative democracies around the world) is a constitution based on the concept of debate and argument to try and work out the best possible outcome. The people vote in the politicians they think most likely to make choices in line with what they would given the same evidence.

Science works with greater accuracy and precision because it deals with limited spheres and can break the world up into closed systems, this cannot be done with politics.

When will these threads end?

Shock horror. Some muslims are mentally ill like some of the rest of us

I'm sorry, but it was because of religion. Obviously her mental condition was part of the problem, but she never would have had such ideas if it wasn't for religion.

All religion should be abolished.

Are you serious?

When I did criminal law, I read cases including where a man cut of his wife's head in order to watch her look for it in the morning, and a man who choked his friend believing that he was at war with a snake in the middle of the Earth. That's psychosis for you.

What of the hundreds of cases where people kill because they believe that Christ told them to (the Yorkshire Ripper) or because they believe they're possessed (like the woman in your OP).

Are you seriously saying that psychotic psychiatric disorders which cause people to act without reason would not cause the deaths of innocents if it was not for religion? What about the atheists who are psychotic and kill? :curious:

Very few people are capable of practising what they preach, I am no different.
im quite sure that this actually has no theological relevance to Islam- in fact, such barbarity probably existed more during the years before the genesis of any stable form of monotheism than anything else.
People this crazy will do stupid **** regardless of their religious beliefs.

What's more worrying is that people that appear 'sane' will carry out actions that are just as disgusting because of their religious beliefs.

"I seek refuge in God from the curse of Satan".

Was her belief in the superstition of religion the cause of this horrififc crime?

No.

She was/is mentally unstable. That or she's some disgusting sadist that's now using religion as part of her cover story. But that wouldn't even make sense as she doesn't appear to have tried to cover it up. Which, you'd presume, you would, if you'd done it for ****s and giggles.

Haha. It probably almost looks like I'm defending religion.

Well. **** that ****. Religion is for the weak. And it's all bull****.

edit: before some mod gets mad, I can't find a youtube video of that without the naughty word. And, at the end of the day, it's just a ****ing word. Plus, though google refuses to predict lots of 'naughty' things (i.e. the names of pornstars, words like 'lesbian', and yeah, 'swear words') IT DOES predict, for some absurd reason, the title of this piece.

Go to Google and type 'religion is' and see what it suggests to you.

edit 2.0: ****, it actually does predict 'lesbian' now. I guess they got all pissed off.

No, her psychosis was the cause for this crime. Mental illness affects a person with no regard for their age, religion, height, colour, weight, nationality or whatever

Very sad for all involved :frown:

She removed the eyes from toys and videos, covering over the eyes on covers of DVDs and books. And she talked constantly about evil spirits and the belief that her daughter was possessed.

Sounds like her superstition in evil spirits was the cause behind this wicked act.
