Jules and You is really helpful with a lot of services such as fixing bikes, language courses, etc. but they hardly ever offer any cheap accomodation. the best thing would be facebook groups, kamernet.nl, kamertje.nl, etc. I would highly advise you NOT to go to any housing companies as almost everyone I know has had bad experiences with them. Private landlords arent neccessarily better but whatever. At least you dont commit yourself and pay any senseless agency fees!

Hi! I need your advise on one other thing.
Me, being an international bachelors student and I'll only arrive in maastricht closer to the commencement of my degree.
Hence which would you advise me to go for accommodation, the FB page, some websites you recommended or the Maastrichthousing web page? Taking in to account that I can't go for viewings etc..

Please advise me on the above.

Thank you!

Cheers:smile:

I was in the same situation (as were a lot of brits), most of whom (over 50% at least) chose to book through the maastrichthousing website.
Plus sides:
- All included cost (water/elect/trash/rent) in a single daily cost.
- Easy to arrange, simply sign up for 35E and book somewhere (this is for the UM managed properties).

Negatives:
- Their organisation sucks.
- A bit overpriced.

The best UM accommodation I have seen from them was north of the Markt, around Sint Teunisstraat.

Thank you for the reply

So you're saying its better to go for maastricht housing being a first timer.. Compared to FB pages.

Honestly, I would avoid MaastrichtHousing.com like the plague.. unless you can't get across to view/meet landlords, in which case you have very little choice. It works, that is what I would say, and I hope that their organisation improves from this year. If you book early you will be able to get the better accommodation, its generally pretty much all booked if you try after late June. I would recommend to start looking in april and have something sorted by mid May ideally. (so dont worry, you have plenty of time! )

Ah, OK sorry - I assumed you were going for the Summer start. There isnt a lot on MaastrichtHousing for the new year (that is university managed) - a lot in a single area in the north west of the city (16.8E/day), one where I am in the South East (13E/day) and a few others that are more expensive......

Probably best to contact an agent (ie wmm).

Hey. I'm a Brit moving to Maastricht next week to get settled & find a job before I start at UCM in February. I'm going to be pretty lonely until my course starts seeing as I don't know anyone so if someone in a similar situation fancies getting a coffee/something stronger with me that would be awesome. I'm alright

I'll be there in January. Have you found a home yet? I'm also gonna start studying at FHS.. Maybe we could be housemates?

Would you let me know If you happen to have a spare room, please?

Thank you.

Okay that's great, we should definitely hang out. Yeah I've found a room already for just 230e! It's a 10 minute cycle to the centre and only about 17msq but that's really not a bad price. I will ask if there is another room coming up for you if you like but you should seriously look at the facebook group 'rooms/ kamer/ zimmer in maastricht.' There you will find a whole load of people looking for flatmates or just renting out their room, it's where I found mine.

With the fb group it's probably gonna have to be a case of sitting by the computer for a couple of days as they get snatched up on pretty much a first come first serve basis. And be persistent! I had nobody reply to me for ages and then I got like 6 messages in one day. You will find one eventually but I guess you just can't be picky.

But I have asked about whether there is another room coming up and will let you know via pm

Yeap! I agree with you on that.. Can't be picky and having your eyes glued on to the computer screen.
I just need something below 300euro maybe close by the faculty.

And thank you once again for the favor. Appreciate it!
Cheers! Keep in touch

Awesome! Thank you for the reply Asha! It was helpful indeed. Any idea how to find a part time job while there and is Dutch a necessity to find one in the university?

You're welcome Teshz! I've got a job, it was difficult to find one but there are shops that offer jobs to English-speaking people. You could try Hollister. If you have teaching experience maybe you could teach English somewhere? There's also the promoteam for the university.

Congrats to you!

Is one job enough to meet the monthly expenses? I am a little bit worried if one job pays enough.

I'm teaching English at the language centre. I got this because I have quite a bit of experience. This, coupled with the promoteam is enough money. However, teaching earns a bit more than working at a shop or café would. I'd recommend ensuring you'll have some support from your family at least in the beginning.

Yeap, I've gotta agree with you on that! At least for a few months. Since you've been living there for sometime now. Could you give me a rough estimate as to how much you spent monthly (living cost), please?

Thank you. =)

Supermarket (I like to cook a lot) = 15-25/week = 60-100/month
Transport - Foot
Partying/socialising = 50/month
Rent (inc. television, int, elect. gas)= 320/month (for me - but it could be as much as 500 from February onwards)
I bought my winter clothing in Spain - 300 euros (coats, jumpers, shoes etc - I had been living in Andalucía for over a year and was not used to the cold weather)
Miscellaneous = 40
Total about 500 but you'll need more for initial deposits, furniture, cleaning supplies, clothes, books etc.

Hope this helps!
