AQA A2 Business studies, analysis & evaluation

Hey

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to achieve the level 3 criteria of analysis and evaluation in AQA A2 Business studies?

One of my business studies teachers keeps giving me really high marks in pratice questions, but the other teacher is giving me really really low marks. The one giving me low marks is an examiner for AQA so i guess i should go by her marks, but im finding it really hard to improve my marks.

So yeah, any tips/links?

thanks

Hello Em hows u? Did u do that Unit 4 paper 2day? Wot did u think? I'm a lot worse at analysis n evaluation...but for analysis you just have to build your argument. Um spose u just do it by saying why things affect the business and the affect it has on them, instead of knowledge where u say wot happens to them. For example if you said they cud benefit from EoS, you could then say in the long run this can improve their competiveness due to being able 2 charge a lower price. For evaluation I just go over the main points and say which are the most important, and whether they are relevant or not. Hmmmm hope it worked today in d exam lol. Cyaz nickxxxxx

Ooooh I took that yesturday!! and Ive completely and utterly messed up!!! Seriousely, i cannot believe how badly it went - everyone of us came out saying exactly the same thing.....and they call business studies a mickey mouse subject! I spent sooo much time revising for it and then the questions completely threw me - and i timed it all wrong :frown: On a brighter note, the unit 5 paper was slightly better. But im really not holding out much hope for my A in either paper to be honest - i think im looking at the lower end of a C/D/E scale - how bout yourself?

To achieve the level of evaluation, you first got to analyse. In order to analyse, you gotta develop a logical argument or line of reasoning like for example, argue the benefits of doing something or try to explain factors that wont allow a particular business to do something. Useful phrases for how to analyse are: 'and so therefore....', 'because....' or 'which will mean....'
After analysing, you can then evaluate by tring to make a judgement to your argument like for example, the sucess of a firm will depend on other factors such as rivals' actions, or consumer tastes/fashions, or the rate of change in the business market. A useful phrase to use when evaluating is to start off by saying 'However,.......would also need to be considered because....' or 'The decision may depend upon....'
Hope this really helps!

Urg Unit 4, the only module I didn't get full marks on :/

Just always give both sides of an argument which is relevant towards the case study in question.

That's how I always approached the questions, seemed to work well (this was three years ago though).

Constant linking back to case study and making judgements throughout (including intro if possible).

e.g. Make point. say a few things. then link to case study. say why relevent, and make some analysis of the case. then make an evaluative point

Most questions can be answered in this way to achieve high marks

Firstly,

1. Terminology

The examiners expect you to know your stuff, so for example if their is a technical word in the question it can sometimes be a good idea to explain what this is (definition). This has very few marks especially at A2 level, having said that every mark counts

2. Application (Apply the question to the case study, literally :P)

You don't pick up marks for just mentioning someone's name or the company's name, thats not application! Its much deeper than this. If you relate your answer directly to the case study, you should be fine.

If a question asks, why did "xyz Ltd" choose to use an asset-led approach?

As well writing down what you know, look into the case study for other clues as to why they choose this method and write about it.

Beware always check how many marks each question is worth, as you are very time contrained (I think Anyway)

3. Analysis

This is opening up a discussion, bringing in the good points, bad points and more.

Look at different factors, effecting different things, which is brought up in the case study. (One skills very few people have is to 'scan read', this involves picking up things important aspects that relates to the question, mention this in your answer aslong as it relates to the question and you'll fine)

Analysis can sometimes be comparing two variables (or businesses), this can be done by means of ratio analysis. Many questions in the past have NOT mentioned the word ratios however to pick up the majority of marks ratios are required in question involving using financial information.

Analysis is basically weighing out the costs against the benefits of doing something (advantages/disadvantages)

In your arguements for both for and against (both for & against must be shown), talk about what happens, for example as a result of doing this that will happen, but if they did that this would happen. That was for you potential A grade candidates :P

4. Evaluation

1 word = conclusion

Many candidates put a arguement forward and reasons for why one way is best, but do not say they should do this.

Always put a conclusion forward

Hope I helped :P
