I went to an interview and open day at Kingston for filmmaking. I must say I was slightly disappointed with equipment and computers that weren't updated, but was impressed by what they offer and how much the Tutor wants me to attend. After careful consideration, speaking to my current tutors at college, speaking to other people's experiences I have decided to make Kingston my firm choice...mainly because I would rather go to a university that has taken the time to view my portfolio, really wants me to come there and also isn't judging me for a low grade in a GCSE which I took 12 years ago. I believe University is what you make it. I already live in London, but will move closer to the university. I want a university that will teach me what I don't know but allow me to be independent in the style of filming I have grown to love

I just got a conditional offer for Criminology for Sep. 2012.. Does anybody here do criminology? is Kingston a good uni for criminology? Why do people say bad things about the uni?? also, would you prefer Westminster uni or Kingston??

I got an offer for Criminology and Sociology  I made it my firm yesterday. I declined Westminster, mainly as Kingston is easier to get to for me. I only live 10 mins away by bus really.

I have a feeling I or someone else has probably asked this but I couldn't find a thread.

Is commuting to Kingston worth considering or is it better to live in halls/private accommodation?

I'd say halls are a whole lot better, it is so easy to meet new people and there are all sorts of people there.

If you aren't really into the social stuff then commuting should be ok for you

What ColyTom says.

I have consistently lived 10 miles away and an hour to an one and a half by bus. I wish I could have the chance to live either in halls or in Kingston, would have made life and socialising sooo much easier when you can actually get to things, and of course not waste 2-3 hours of daylight commuting.

This coming from one of the self-proclaimed most introverted internet warriors at the uni.

I would definitely suggest that you should consider the convenience aspects of living so close to your place of study.

Best of luck that the choice you make is the right one for you though.

So something like 55 miles is probably stupid to consider commuting. Especially if it ended up being 4 or 5 days a week. Thanks for your help ColyTom and Seaton x
Hello Guys I've applied for MA Games development and have got an offer letter from Kingston
I have a few questions now
1. How good or bad is the college? ( I mean I am a nerd so I have no trouble with academic work but would like to know how good the teachers and equipment are at the college)
2. Is it indeed hard to get accommodation near the college?
3. The prospectus claims that the course I've picked out is designed and collaborated with Sony and Dreamworks. Now how true is this claim?
4. Is Kingston really out of london, I mean on the outskirts? I dont want to miss out on the LONDON life!?

Hiya.

I'm not yet a student at the university, but have visited numerous times for open days/interviews/selection day etc. I have also done quite a bit of research but I'm sure current students' opinions will come in handy too.

1. How good or bad is the college? ( I mean I am a nerd so I have no trouble with academic work but would like to know how good the teachers and equipment are at the college)

From what I seen, all lecturers I spoke to seemed incredibly helpful and supportive. They went out their way to speak to applicants despite being unrelated to the course itself when passing on the campus, in the cafeteria etc. The openness of the university is a really nice atmosphere and doesn't feel divided whatsoever. In the LRC they have 3 zoned areas, each equiped with computers, laptops etc, organised into varied "noise" zones. The university's e-learning system is state-of-the-art and accessible from halls, on campus etc.

2. Is it indeed hard to get accommodation near the college?

I have applied to halls, but looking around there are a number of student houses in the area. Try to broaden your search into the likes of Twickenham and Richmond. These are roughly 15 minutes away on a bus so quite convenient. The university has limited halls spaces and so I'd recommended browsing properties as soon as you can really. I'm sure there will be no shortage if there is no pressure for them to build new halls with the influx of students seeking accommodation.

3. The prospectus claims that the course I've picked out is designed and collaborated with Sony and Dreamworks. Now how true is this claim?

I wouldn't know, sorry. I'd imagine to make such a claim would have to hold some water though? Just as my course is recommended by the NHS, I'd imagine that Sony and Dreamworks have forwarded what they seek knowledge within for potential employees within the field, so that the course will make you more employable in higher roles. Can only be a good thing, right?

4. Is Kingston really out of london, I mean on the outskirts? I dont want to miss out on the LONDON life!?

I travelled via a bus from West London, it took me around 25 minutes. You are only 20 minutes on the tube from Central London. Kingston is classed more as Surrey because of how the counties surround the capital, however if you were to look at how far East London extends, you're further from Central London in somewhere like Dagenham as opposed to Kingston, yet ask anybody which they'd class more as London they'd probably say Dagenham! Kingston was rated the best place to live in and around London by The Times, personally I love it because I come from a small city and I love the idea of being somewhere away from the hussle and bustle but only a stonesthrow from the vibrancy. Kingston itself has hippodrome and is known for its nightlife however!

I hope this helped you somewhat.

Thank you so much Rachel, I think you have given me a better picture of what to look forward to now!
Its good to get a detailed response to every question
I received a prospectus for Kingston for their Social Work degree. Thought it seemed OK, but decided tocheck further. Went on to Wikipedia and scrolled down the Kingston University Wikipedia page, and there it says "Controversies". Okay, these happened in 2008, but it has completely put me off.

That was really helpful, thanks!
I'll be joining in September for MA in Production Design and trying to find out the more I can!

Hey,

I was between UAL Chelsea and Kingston last year, and I chose Kingston in the end. The facilities at Knights park are perfect for Art+Design students. I don't know what the ISD course is about, but I like how Kingston works and it is really close to students.
Chelsea in my opinion focuses a lot on its reputation and doesn't care so much about students satisfaction anymore, I am really glad I chose Kingston in the end. I have discussed the subject with Chelsea and UAL students and they told me pretty much the same thing.
Kingston is really high in Design schools reputation as well, if that is what you are looking for, but my personal advice would be to look into each different courses structure and decide what is best for you right now. That's what I did last year.
I don't know about Hertfordshire but I wouldn't suggest Westminster

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for your comment. I appreciate it. Did you do the MA Design (product + space) at kingston ? I would like to know more about it. Yes i have heard that chelsea focuses more on their reputation rather then students but Westminster I heard is pretty good compared to kingston. Why would you not suggest Westminster as I was looking at taking up that uni.

Im really confused about the three UAL, Westminster and Kingston

No I am not doing the product and space course, so I don't know how this program works.
Last year that I was checking and asking around most people told me not to go to Westminster, I had a counselor to help me with my applications and she advised me to not even apply, only if I didn't get in to the rest. But I still think that it is better to choose the course for what it has to offer and what is more to your liking.

I've been offered to do law and criminology here in September? I am pretty sure i would commute to the uni, I'm just wondering if anyone is doing this course or knows anyone that does? What's it like here in Kingston?

Applied for psychology at Kingston and received an offer, anyone studying it at the moment with any opinions on the subject/uni?
