its dependant on your aims. its like asking how longs a piece of string.

Well, I want to get fit and lose a bit of weight.

a few times a week at about an hour a time would probably be substantial, but it depends on how you are currently. the gym instructor who gives you your induction tomorrow is likely to ask you these sort of questions and advise you accordingly.

Ah right, ok thank-you.

The Instructor will usually ask you what you want to gain from going to the gym.
And then he/she will draw up a excercise program based on that, so i wouldn't worry about it to much
My gym is near to where i work so i go during my lunch breaks for half an hour everyday except Wednesday and the weekend. Wednesday is good to take off as a rest for your muscles to grow, otherwise you'll just continue to rip them and could cause damage. However this shouldn't be a problem if your not intending to lift too many weights. I would recommend maybe 15 mins warm up excercises with light dumbells and those big balls to stretch the muscles, then 10-15mins on the rowing machine or do some running or som cycling for some aerobic exercise for losing weight. Also swimming is good if the gym has this facility.

i don't think shes gonna be tearing muscle up and pumping iron. she wasn't even asking that.
But even if you are just doing aerobic exercise, your muscles still tear, hence your leg muscles sometimes ache.

you could say the same for walking over long distances. do you think people walk on thier hands the next day after?
i'm talking about running over long distances...

you should get told all of this in your induction really. they will probably ask how many times a week you are able to come and how long you will have to spend and then draw up an exercise programme accordingly. dont worry about it, theyre there to help!

Don't set your aims too high because it means your more likely to quit, start low and raise the bar bit by bit.
