How many sexual partners in a lifetime?

I'm at an all girl grammar school and we were discussing the fact that the average British person has 5 sexual partners in one lifetime (according to one of my friends - I haven't checked this). We thought it was rather a low number and did an average of the 10 girls in the room and it turned out our average was 5.6. We had already exceeded our rations for life by two thirds of a person and we're just 18! (Oh dear) Obviously religious reasons would restrict some people to one partner in a lifetime but how many sexual partners do people generally expect to have? Has anyone had relationship problems with a partner when they revealed their "number"? Just curious :p:

I'm a Christian and I believe that there will be only be one for me. Obviously, most other people have different ideas than I do. Luckily with my boyfriend its not a problem, and he believes the same thing.

Golly, yeah that does seem low. If i'd have been asked that question, but hadnt have been provided with that average, i'd probably have guessed that the average would have been about 12.

Do you believe the one for you is your current boyfriend, or will you wait until you are older to make that decision?

i heard the average was 8?
My current boyfriend.... but it's not just cos he's my first boyfriend, first love and all that. I have had other boyfriends before. But he is just so different and we are incredibly in love, we have a working relationship and it seems right. We've prayed about it and we're going to get married
I know we'll get negative responses to it and people telling us that we're too young, but I think that if you believe that you will stay together through changes and bad and worse etc, why wait to get married? It will be just as valid if you get married younger.

Durex say: People around the world have had an average number of 10.5 sexual partners

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/sex/story/0,12550,818356,00.html says the average brit has 10...
3, one straight, one gay, and one inanimate when the other two are not available.

Well that's more like it! Phew! I was getting worried there for a bit, I'm only on three but I've got the university years to come yet :p: :p:

only? i do question the use of that adverb.

At what age did you lose your virginity?

Under 12 1%
12-13 8%
14-15 23%
16-18 40%
19-20 13%
21-24 10%
25-30 2%
Never had sex 3%

What about the 40+ category? Surely 40 year old virgin is not simply a film?!

Well I used only as I still have 7 of the quota of 10 left

but it's far from a quota. it's a statistical piece of faeces which will only misguide and mutate the very society in which we live.

Still its reassuring to know I've got to sleep with 8 people to become above average, rather than 3. But then again I've been above average in everything I've ever done in my life... :p:

i really don't know about those sorts of surveys though. for example, durex did one through their website. but what types of people are going to go on the durex website? hmm.
Amusing how men say on average they've had 13 sexual partners compared to 7 for women. Who are they having sex with?

other men? :p:

The 35-44 age group is the most promiscuous

I shall tell that to my mother the next time she tells me sleeping around is BAD

Ahhh the old 'rule of three' (Divide the number of partners men claim to have had by three, and times the number of partners women claim to have had by three and you're getting a more accurate picture)
Sydney
other men? :p:

That would mean the 5% or whatever have to bring the average from 7 to 13, so if 95% are straight, the average for gay men would have to be 127 partners :P:
