The Student Room Group

flatmate...

there is one girl in my flat who smokes...or smoked..this is the issue.
i keep smelling smoke really badly in my room - so much that i have to sit with the window open and take my contact lenses out because they hurt so much because of the smoke. you could actually see it in my room.

i said to her before can you please stop smoking in the flat cos it makes my room smell and my eyes hurt and she said yes.
i just asked her now and she is swearing blind it isnt her and that she was next door and how i should have faith in her and that its annoying her that i keep thinking its her. Sorry but what the hell else do i believe? no one else is in, and where else is it gonna come from? do we have a phantom smoker?

is your flat a non-smoking flat? if it is then shes breaking her contract by smoking in her room, so you should report her.

Reply 2

it is a non-smoking flat.

i know but then its obvious its me whos reported her and i dont really want to face her wrath.

Reply 3

Rather gave away the anonymity there didn't you?

A landlord won't do jack about someone smoking in non-smoking properties.

Have you asked the others in the flat if they've smelt/seen smoke? If they have, you should get one of them to ask this girl nicely but firmly to stop smoking. Make sure you explain how it's affecting you all in the flat This way it's not just you who's 'picking' on her. If she still doesn't stop, then the group of you could tell her that you're reporting her for smoking.

It seems pretty obvious it is this girl, but if any of you have 'evidence', e.g. butts outside window/in bins, this would be helpful.

Good luck!

hummm good point. then the only way to catch her out would be to do this........ next time u smell her smoking in her room go into the kitchen or something and set the fire alarm off...by burning food etc. that way when the people come to check they will smell cigarrete smoke and she'l be rumbled. i know it sounds drastic but the fire brigade are only called out when the dean etc know there is a real fire and not a false alarm so dont worry about wasting there time.
but seriously she is being just plain rude...if she wanted a smoking flat why didnt she just put her name down to live in one? some people dont make sense at all sometimes

Shut your window/s. Tape up the door frame. Use some Oust/Air freshener.

Failing that, report her or bitchslap her into submission.

ah yeah what the heck with the anonymity, she wont use this anyway. *hopes*

I could do that actually...but shes still insistent that its not here! which is making me think im going mad!

everyone smells it too. gah.

she didnt put her name down as a smoker because her mum filled in the form and she didnt want her to know she smokes :|

Ok what you need to do is get a old style tape player and record a tape of you shouting really loud "PLEASE STOP SMOKING" wire it into mains socket in her room, I mean wire not plug, and then remove all the buttons from the tape player except the play button, which you will then press and remove, turning up the volume all the way before running out of the room. She will soon get the idea and you will be sipping margaritas on a beach in Mexico's with all the precious toblerone you can eat. Guaranteed.

Buy some fumigation spray, and spray it under her door, and claim its not you and that she should have faith in you.

Failing that poke her eyes out with a stick, she'll never find you then.

 hahahahahahah

i cant tell her not to smoke inside again because shes still swearing down its not her!

and the smoke alarm in the kitchen is actually a heat alarm, so smoke wouldnt set it off. plus if they did come up to check it out theyd prob blame me cos my room smells that bad

Why can't she smoke outside? If other people don't like it, you have to respect their wishes (ex-smoker here!). Or, ask her to smoke out of a window that isn't near yours? You don't want this to snowball into a massive issue, so be polite and firm, but no shouting!

Reply 13

ive been firm but the issue is, she says its not her, so asking her to smoke outside doesnt help!

That probably wouldn't work. If it's anything like the system in my hall, a red light comes on on the sensor that's been activated, thus they'd know that the alarm was set off in the kitchen, not the person's bedroom. There was a similar system in my hall in first year, but when the alarm went off, the control pannel gave the name/location of the sensor that had been tripped (dunno if it had a light on the actual sensor cos it was never my floor)

Talk to your other flatmates about it. She isn't really being fair.

do your walls have holes in them!? or do u just sit at the window.... im sorry but i dont believe that it irriates your eyes! i have flat mates who smoke in my non smoking flat... but the only time i can smell it is when they open their door! i have my window wide open and i never smell it!
im sorry (dont all argue with me coz i dont give a sh*t) but i think your just being a moan! - obviously unless you do have holes in your wall

I sympathise, we've managed to ban our smoking flatmate from doing it in the kitchen & dining room, but now our bedrooms smell as he's smoking in his room. Aargh. (I don't have holes in my walls either!) It probably builds up in the hallway then comes in when I open my door or something.

Some people have sensitive eyes.

OP - are you in university halls? My halls are very strict about smoking. Two boys from my block were evicted last week because their cleaner caught them smoking. Could you not mention it to halls management? x x

yeah im making it up that my eyes hurt. and if i sat at my window it wouldnt be an issue...its the fact that we're on opposite sides of the corridor so my door faces hers...the smoke comes out of her door, into the corridor and under my door.

you can actually see the smoke so i dont quite think im making this up u tard.

i wear contact lenses so of course smoke irritates them. do you wear lenses? have you never been in a smoky place and it hurt? jeez. prat.
