Guys - Growing Hair?

Ok need some tips on growing hair. I want to grow my hair long around 4-5 inches. How can I achieve this without hair falling out and becomming dry.

Normally when ive tried in the past it becomes drier and I have to wash my hair daily. Also how can I get my hair to be really silky type. I currently use 'American Crew Daily SHampoo & Conditioner'. Its good but I am not getting really thick/silky hair.

Is it to do with products or diet?
Please could you let me know all the tips so that I can achieve good/strong/silky hair.
Cheers!

To achieve long hair, first of all don't get it cut. Second of all, speak to an expert on hair. As a man with hair that reaches nearly to his waist, I have NEVER thought about this.

as a dude wif relatively long hair..i'd suggest reducing ur hair washing down from daily to bout once a week :p:..i'm not kidding, it looks best when its a wee bit greasy..and to soften ur hair i'd suggest a good conditioner containing papaya extracts (yesh i got that off "friends" but it really is tru!!)

I wash and condtion about 3 times a week, I have to because I don't like my hair to get greasy and sticky... use products with jobajoba(?) oil, non silicon containing products and also maybe a styling product to reduce frizz and flyaways. Oh, and don't let people put you down.
im having trouble too, my hair is reallly strong and straight, and if i let go it just grows outwards instead of falling down... so the only option i have is to let it groww a lot so the weight of the hair itself pulls it down... what a mess in my head...

i got one of those ULTRA- NUTRITIVE shampoos, so the nutrition makes the hair go a ibt more graesy and then the weight gets to pull it down a bit more.

if anyone has any ideas for me, plz help too!! :P
I also find that my hair is best without shampoo etc. Ive only managed to sustain this non-washing for about 4 months at a time, after which I start getting dandruff and a very itchy scalp etc. Then I have to return to frequent shampoo use.

Try not using shampoo for a while - keep wahsing your hair with water though, and rub it down from the roots to the tips while youre in the shower, to make the grease distribution more uniform.

My hair naturally gets greasy after a day hence why I try and shampoo every day. As stated above im using 'Americans Crew Daily Moisturising Shampoo and Americans Crew daily conditioner'. Would you say these products are good with my growing process?

I use Pomade again by American Crew to help shape my hair. It does work but I can really pick a style at the moment as my hair isnt long enough, So instead im wearing a cap or hat until it has grown further.

Seriously though you are best of washing it less when it is longer (I had long hair in my youth), it goes through an icky gungy phase but after that it is a lot better.

I think a lot of hair type is down to genetics.

First off, just let it grow. Stop washing it so often - the reason it goes so greasy is basically because your follicles think, "Oh my god, I keep secreting more grease, but it just gets stripped off! What's going on? Am I inadequate? Augh! *oil slick*". You could try going weeks without washing it with shampoo/conditioner, but this gets a bit offputting after a while - cue anecdote:
My boyfriend held out for three or four weeks just washing his hair using water. He has quite long, thick and curly hair, and I was supportive because I'd heard reports that after a few weeks the grease subsides and it gets easier to manage. It didn't bother me that much for the first couple of weeks, but (on the complaints of a few others in our group) eventually it got a bit too much to deal with, and I threw him into the shower with a bottle of shampoo. The subsiding oil-slick hypothesis was not true.

However, I do find that if I let myself go for a week in the holidays (when nobody sees me) and stop washing my hair for five or six days, afterwards it only needs to be washed every two days (rather than daily). So secondly, try going a short time without washing your hair with detergents.

As for haircare, suck it up and go grovel around the women's haircare section in Boots or Superdrug. Get some intensive conditioner; you could also try 'volumising' things.

A good trick for the 'silky' hair that seems to work (though I wouldn't bother with it too often): find a tub of coconut oil. You can usually get this from pharmacies. It smells pretty nasty, and it's incredibly greasy. Wet your hair, slather it in coconut oil, then wrap your head in cling-film (being careful not to cover any ventilation holes, of course) and leave it for half an hour or an hour. Then prepare to spend a while rinsing and washing a few times with shampoo and conditioner. That improves the condition of your hair for a bit, though I admit it's a bastard to get the stuff all out of your hair.

For a more frequent effort, look for some of http://www.shophereforgifts.com/product_info.php?product_id=ES11078CD&cat_id=13059&dept_id=1300 this. I got some from my local Superdrug at one point, but they don't seem to stock it anymore. It smells gorgeous and leaves hair beautifully soft and silky.

ahhh my hairdresser made me wash my hair every three days because it was too dry or something. it goes really greasy but after about 2weeks it evens out so your hair gets used to it and you dont get grease until the 3rd day instead of the 2nd.
also if your hairs greasy only condition the tips not the scalp as this wont help or dont condition at all but if your hair is dry use a moisterising mask such as the one from garnier fructis every couple of washes to stop it from being so dry (you leave it on your wet hair for one minute and rinse, your hair will be silky soft and it really works!!)
