Salford is rough??

Hello!!
If there is already a thread about this i apologise!
I have applied to salford this year for the fashion course and have heard really bad things about salford as a place saying its really rough and you can shot n all types of things. The uni seems to be contained within itself and i was thinking i may not even need to venture into salford town at all. Can anyone enlighten me on this, or if i get in should i buy a bullet proof vest???

:p: It depends where about's you go in Salford. Obviously avoid areas like moss side and dodgy looking council estates but you've just gotta be aware like anywhere else. There's some really nice places in Salford!

Thats reassuring! I really want to get in, not just cos of good course but because of manchester nightlife!!!! Im a socialist! And i dont wanna get shot for being social!!! AGH!
Saying that, i am from Barnsley and their are less rough places that parts of here i tell ya!
it's not all that bad, it's a bit scruffy especially around the precinct where John Lester and Eddie Coleman court are (student halls) but theres no trouble there cos it's right next door to the police station, it's definitely not as bad as Eccles though, but it was only the school of nursing that was based there and they've moved now, athough i think Little Hulton's probably the roughest part of Salford, and thats a fair way away from the uni...it's nearer Bolton.
but to be honest you'll probably not veture into Salford all that much what with the uni being right by Manchester city centre, you'll more than likely end up in Manc....it's pretty much the same as any other city.

Ha Moss Side personaly I would rather live in Moss Side than Salford because Moss Side isn't actually that rough, you see it dosn't have many chavs, it just has nasty gangs. If you don't owe people money then the Moss Side gansta's are easy to avoid.

The Salford chavs on the otherhands are like worms, they bread like rabbits and they spill out their run down estates.

The chances of you being shot is extremely slim and I in NYE 2005/06 Manchester was about the only major city which didn't have any major incidents despite 300,000 people partying in the city that night.

The University itself is not the worst part of Salford, its rough but its nothing major. The halls are all self contained and the campus itself is safe.

I don't know anything about Barnsley other than its in West Yorkshire (I think) what I will say is I would rather be in a big city on as a saturday night than a small town because the smaller towns seem to have a lot more trouble. I have never even seen any incidents late at night in Manchester other than the odd drunk shouting in the street or a chav giving a bouncer a bit of abuse.

There is a lot of crime in Manchester and Salford but then there is also a lot of people. Its like London the crime statistics are shocking but the place itself is very safe. As longs as you avoid the dodgy estates you should be fine.

Salford is rough but Moss Side is no more rough. I have vast experience of the two places.

That bit's very true. I came to Manchester more used to going out in blackburn, in bburn, there is 1 street with taxi's on and without fail there are fights every weekend there. The scally club people came out looking for a fight most of the time it seemed. As amusing as it could be sat eating my take away with my friends, it could have been pretty intimidating if i wasn't with my friends.
Manchester doesn't seem half as rough in that way, i certainly feel safer here than in blackburn.

As for salford itself.. i don't know as much about it. There was an incident in may i think wher a guy got battered for shouting at youthes for vandalising his car, but doubt thats anything to do with uni area. in the same way you can't compare incidents happening in wythenshawe to typical manchester living.

hi i have been staying in salford and studied in man met for design.
personally salford is ok but if u really want for fun in the city centre, why don't u just apply to man met for their design course. as far as i know their fashion course is great.( in my pt of view they r much better than salford)their art and design A level median is about 310pt, when salford is about 210pt.

and their student satisfactory rate is 3.8 , when salford is 3.7.
i just hope u will chose a good place for ur fashion course....hope it is not too offencive to any salford student.

Don't compare courses on their entry points, that is just marketing, the Salford Art and Design department is 5* rated and is soon to be located in a brand new state of the art complex.

I am not saying one course is better than the other I have no idea, but you cannot judge a standard of a course by entry requirements. It is purely to with demand.
It is highly unlikely that you are going to get shot attending Salford Uni for no reason. Salford can be very rough in parts but you will have no reason to go to these parts. Manchester does have a good nightlife and you really should not be concerned about the gun crime in Manchester if you are attending Salford Uni. You obviously still have to be aware of the dangers stundents face, like at any Uni, eg rape, burglary, etc.

was that on the strawberry road estate by any chance? i know loads of people who've had their cars interfered with when they parked there.

i think the best bet for parking (if you attend the frederick road campus) is on the road that goes around eddie coleman and john lester court...it leads to the police station so i doubt any idiots would be stupid enough to try smashing up anyones cars.

Salford isnt that bad. Ther are rougher areas in other parts of the country. You just need to be aware, like you always do. Ive hardly ever heard of anyone being Shot. I think Salford just has a bad reputation.

Hey!
Im just wondering if anyone knows when this relocation is happening, i would be starting this september for fashion you see. The reason i didnt apply at manchester for fashion is because they are very focused on just design and illustration, where as i am very interested in the styling and photography side also. The thing is i never managed to see sewing rooms or anything at Salford, anyone know what they are like?? They told me they have a photographic studio and darkroom and stuff which was important to me.

Also SO MANY QUESTIONS!! Where do you think the best place to stay is??? I like the idea of castle irwell because i really want to meet lots of people and all that but it looks like a good walk from train station and the centenary building where fashion is. Does the student union play alot of rock, indie, alternative music and how full does it get...i like a good night out when im not loaded with work!!!

Any answers would be greatly appreciated!!
well my patners coming with me so i'm moving out nd ive registered with the local council for these areas:
Eccles
blackfriars
pendleton
swinton
warsley
orsall
any i should avoid?
cheers!
^^ definitely Eccles. i wouldn't say it was rough or owt, it's just such an ugly dump, not somewhere you'd wanna choose to live.

Pendleton's where that shooting happened earlier this month, but again, it's not actually that bad, i've lived in Pendleton for coming on 2 years and even though it's a bit run-down and a bit of a dump, it's actually not as bad as it looks.

Swinton is not a bad area either, not sure what the council estates are like there though.

Avoid the estates on the Langworthy (pendleton), and Ordsall and Blackfriars (Broughton) like the plague as they are very rough.
have applied to trafford council and bury council too what are these areas like????

That is a very vague question both boroughs have the a population of around 250,000 so there areas are big. I don't know much about Bury but I know a lot about Trafford.

Stretford has a half decent council estate near the Quadrant round about, it is not too bad for a council estate. There is another one in Stretford near the Arndale on Chester Road, this is quite rough.

There are also rough parts of Old Trafford which is really in the rough part of Moss Side and again should be avoided,

Some of the better council areas are in Barlow Moor (Chorlton) and Parrs Wood (Didsbury) but there is a huge waiting list and you need to be from the area to be even considered.

The problem is you're probably not going to be pirioty which means you have little say where you end up.

However Salford University have accodomation suited to couples and families so I am not sure why you just can't live there.
