The Student Room Group

The next best option (for 'Oxbridge Rejects')

I've been reading the 'Push Guide to Universities', and have noticed it has a habit of labelling some universities as being "full of Oxbridge Rejects". Amongst others, it says that Durham, Warwick and Bristol are in this catagory.

This has got me wondering: where do you think is the next best place to spending your university years at Oxbridge? I know that a lot of it comes down to personal choice and preference, but which unis have a similar hard-working ethos, intelligent students and sophisticated extra-ciric stuff. Plus a good reputation?

Personally, I think that the unis are:
1. Durham
2. Warwick
3. York
4. Bristol
5. St. Andrew's

Any ideas?

All the Russell Group universities http://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/

I think Durham has to be the most overrated university in the country

Exeter is chock-full of Oxbridge rejects. Of the 9 people in my flat last year, 3 of us were Oxbridge rejects and this is probably fairly indicative of the uni as a whole.

I've never been a big Durham fan myself, but that might be because their medical faculty is in the middle of nowhere. I think..

LSE and Imperial.

I'd say from what I've seen on here LSE is as good a uni as anywhere.

Would I be wrong in saying the calibre of student is probably as good as Oxbridge too?

LSE for law, eco, etc
Imperial for sc, med, etc

both these on a par with oxbridge and in some cases, candidates reject oxbridge for them. [2 cases at my school last year]

Look to russell group next (incl KCL and UCL)

durham, warwick, bristol & york very very over-rated.

edinburgh for a city life; st andrews for a quiet one; manchester for a gay one; nottingham for a short one.

most under-rated uni, IMO .... Glasgow. ancient univ with top faculties and top alumni.

Has anybody received offers from UCL, KCL, Warwick or Durham? I´m an Oxbridge reject and have applied to these universities (for Law). Haven´t heard anything since I got my acknowledgement letter...

I am getting worried about all these comments, and from random things i have read on the Nottingham forum. Is it that bad?

I doubt it's that bad, or much worse than any other city, but Nottingham is the city in the UK with the highest gun-crime rate. But I've been to Nottingham, wasn't shot. So that's okay.

For my subject (Oriental Studies), it's SOAS, without a shadow of a doubt. Which is why I'm extra-pleased I got an offer from them.

Just today. Which was a nice surprise.

Ahhh, maybe I will receive mine soon...I hope... I applied to Oxford but was rejected...knowing what I know now, I wouldn't mind applying again since I am more prepared (choosing college, reading round subject, etc) so of course one option is to reapply but SOAS is certainly one of the best for Oriental studies, and I may go there for the international links they have to japanese institutions.
Other good unis apart from SOAS and Oxbridge for Oriental studies are Leeds, Sheffield, Cardiff, and Edinburgh.

lol this reminds me of a blackadder quote:

"There's Durham, Cambridge and Oxford, and it's only worth going to two of those universities!"
"Yeah I know, apparently Oxford's a right dump!"

Hull, actually. Which leads me to refer to it as 'one of the Great Universities' whenever it's mentioned.
