It's because people can only apply to one, so they have to justify their choice by comparing the two, even by arbitrary criteria - that and it's a tradition, one which people don't want to be the first to break, thereby further perpetuating it

Well I have a Hertford one, a Bodleian one (Y), a LMH one, a Pembroke one and a Botanic gardens one - the Hertford and LMH were the only ones from the open day though :P No Worcester one though.. ;(
