The Student Room Group

Im living in Opal Court at the moment and its turned out really well in the end. When I moved in, it was a building site but all the work has finished now  (no more being woken up with the building running across the roof or seeing me half naked through the window)

As its opposite the hospital theres quite a lot of medical/dentistry/biomedical students here but it is a real mix.

I cant say theres much of a community atmosphere though as theres only one full block and three (4?) empty ones and people tend to keep themselves to themselves.

I chose this place over halls because I didnt want to be woken up at stupid hours during the night and overall its ok with that kinda thing. Although there are still some idiots who scream and shout on their way through the courtyard. In that respect, Id get a room that faces outwards as youd get a view as well.

Seeing as everything brand new, the place is really clean and the ensuits is brilliant :p: Rooms are a good size too.

You asked about crime.. the flats are on London Road which is known for not being the nicest area, I always see prositutes and crack heads hanging around the bus stop outside. Ive not heard of any trouble as such but Im always really careful/nervous on my home, even in the early evening. Then again, might just be my paranoia

This place might be a bit more expensive than the other places around but Ive seen most of them and this is definately the nicest.

Hope Ive been of some help
Dont know if it relevant but you asked... theres quite a lot of asian people here, not many white and a few chinese. Think its about 50/50 with the males and females.

Hey I'm moving into Opal Court in September, it looks really nice and the staff there are friendly. The rooms are bigger than your average student halls and the kitchen/lounge area is huge too.

Asking about experiences though, since the place is only recently finished there will be more people moving in this September than there was this year so it will be noisier but in my experience it's more fun when there's a lot of people around.
haha yeah the staff are so friendly, when they want your money!!! lol actually I guess they're ok, compared to the UNITE staff - who just rip you off! lol they get things done, most of the time so I'm not really complaining. If you're just looking at halls, Opal Court is not that expensive, considering you have ensuite as well. Greenbank and Carnatic are over 100 pounds/wk if you go catering! Even if you go self-catering, you still have to pay 90 pounds for a bus pass every term. There's not much of an atmosphere at the moment, but as Lucy said, I reckon it'll be cooler next year when there are more people! They should really throw some barbecues on that 'landscaped garden' they spent months making... this year we have got a great deal though as everything's free and we get refund money haha yes!

thanks peeps, ive put down my deposit for next year. ive seen my room and its huge and the kitchen and living area has all new stuff in and no ones lived in the flat before so its all fresh!!!

staff seem like sound ppl, from what ive heard, its nearly full*(all 3 & 4 bed flats have gone) so there should be more of an atmosphere there.

wat block are u in?
try and get a room that doesnt face in to the courtyard though... people tend to drunkenly sing out there at stupid hours, unless that is you dont mind that sort of thing.

i'm living there and it's brilliant now. though i'm about to kill one of my flatmate i think.
the female head manager is a bit of a **** but the rest of the staff is absolutely lovely. esp the 2 security guys, who say "bonjour" to us every time , really sweet.
i've never met anyone in here though ? "meet" as in "socialize with" i mean

lol yeah i've found that as a lot of ppl here are living within their clique of friends, everyone seems to keep themselves to themselves so it can be quite lonely sometimes, but i love my flatmates nonetheless  which flat you in?

Well it's an indoor pool so it's all year round during normal opening times for the gym which requires a seperate membership and is not included in your rent.

Forgot to add: if you really want this place then apply as soon as possible, it fills up ridiculously quick for some reason

I know housing week starts on the 4th of February but I know that Opal started taking bookings earlier than that last year and everything was gone by then. Your best bet would probably be to drop by and ask or if that's not possible phone them

No the housing week is definitely the 4th of February and they'll start letting rooms out then. See the thing is, Opal is a private hall so they'll take anyone and are under no obligation to keep rooms aside for first years unless they have an agreement with one of the universities. You can book rooms in private halls but you will be required to put down a deposit
I currently hold a conditional offer for the university of liverpool which I have selected as my firm choice. I would like accommodation at opal court.
I would be very grateful if you can outline the procedure which I must follow to ensure my place in this private accommodation for my uni course. I dont want to live in halls. Would be wiked if you can get bak 2 me asap ppl, cheers

If it's for this year you may be a little late, Opal Court tends to fill up really quickly. The best thing to do will be to get in touch with them for an application form. Same with Prospect Point (or any other accommodation you want) although I'm about 90% sure Prospect Point is full for this year.

initially when we signed our contract last yr.. we were told that we are able to extend our contract till end of july n we just need to let them know end of june.. n we had the same thing the year b4 with no problem.. n in nov 07, we were told tat we cannot extend the contract n also we must move out by 28th of june... meaning all dental students will have no place to stay for 1 month....
unless u signed a 52week contract in the beginning...

I wouldn't recommend opal court purely on the manager, she was horrible when I stayed there in 06/07. That and the place is ridiculously overpriced
