What is the role of the various Student Unions? Does every uni have one?

Officially they represent the students as a (sort of) seperate body from the Uni, to make sure students aren't getting ripped off and are getting decent teaching.

Most unis Unions are heavily involved in the social side of being a student, having societies as part of the union. Most Union buildings house typical student provisions, shops, welfare, finance and most importantly BARS!!
