The Student Room Group

They were wrong. There's been another thread about this and all us students who are actually at Lancaster were a tad bewildered by it. There's actually a campaign going on to attack that board, hahaha. Anyway, if the locals hate the students then I certainly haven't been witness to it and I wouldn't imagine it's any worse than every other uni in the country. As for the suicides, well it's hardly a regular occurence. It's not like every day someone throws themselves off the tower!

Hope that helped in some way. Don't judge a whole university based on one apparently very bitter persons opinions.

I've been here for three years (and living off campus for two of those), and never known any real problems with the locals. Saturday nights in Lancaster itself aren't that great, that's the only time I've seen any trouble, but you learn to avoid them, and either have a night in or go to the Sugarhouse (which is students only).

As for suicide, I heard all that stuff before I started, about the place having a high suicide rate but I think it's a bit of an urban legend. Lancaster is a nice place, I'd recommend visiting it though as it's definitely not for everyone. Having said that, most people here do love it
The locals have always been nothing but friendly as far as I have experienced... obviously there are always some people who are like 'grr students' but that happens all over the country lol.

As for the suicides thing, I think that's just a myth, everyone I know is really happy here. It's probably just been spun up because the tower is here and it might've been possible to jump off it at some point or something... I don't really know... but I don't know anyone who is suicidal :P

By 'scary locals' I think people may be referring to the scum who sometimes visit Lancaster from the sess pit that is Morecambe. That is a truly horrible place where the chances of getting beaten up are quite high... so simply don't go there at night!

Lancaster on the other hand is full of students. You sometimes see violence on a weekend night (like any other city) but it tends to be between scallies rather than scallies attacking students.

I think most people view Lancaster as a pretty safe little place where people watch out for each other. Oh and many of the 'locals' i.e. non-students, turn out to be Lancaster Uni graduates/mature students/uni staff in my experience! (I'm a graduate who now works in the management school).

OK thanks, I did think that person sounded a bit OTT. Just checking, that's all.

Something should actually be done about that site, it made Lancaster sound like a hell-hole! It could be very misleading.

I think the site is still quite new (although I could be wrong) and they haven't got the hang of things like moderators or getting people to register before they can post.

I think the admissions dept. at Lancaster Uni might get in touch with the people who run the site and see if they can implement some 'play nicely rules' or track IP addresses so they can see if its one person with a vendetta against the uni.

I definitely think proper forums like this one where there's people to check there is nothing untoward going on are the way forward. And that's not to say negative comments should be banned - they should just be backed up and constructive rather than comments like 'Lancaster sux coz me mate's girlfriend went and she didn't like it and everyone's racist and the builidings are made of concrete'.

I'll setup my webcam to view Bowland tower 24 hours a day and then you guys can monitor the suicide rate. I think there's been about 6 drop today but I might've missed a few when I was in my tutorials. Rubbish place Lancaster ... absolutely terrible...
The suicide thing comes from bowland tower. there have only been four deaths in the whole time lancaster has been open. 2 were suicides, the other two were unknown. Apparently its not that bad as most universitys simply hide the matter, whereas lancaster cant exactly hide someone jumping off bowland tower.

I've been offered three courses at Lacaster and really like what they have written in the brochures. However, I wanted a different view and looked at unofficialguides.com. There were loads of people saying that Lancaster locals hate the students and there are regular attacks on them. They also said there are loads of suicides??

Please tell me they were wrong!

That's rubbish!

Lancaster is a great University. Best way is to come and find out for yourself
