I'd say it doesnt make an iota of difference academically because they are both sound unis with good reputations so go to whichever one you like the look of best bear in mind Bristol has a brilliant social life too.

i live near sheffield and still say bristol

Bear in mind that the living costs in Bristol are probably far more than Sheffield just to be practical. Look at the price of accommodation living out in your second and third year price of beer 
etc.
There really isnt much in it academically

I would say there isnt much in the social aspect either, Bristol is quite a fashionable area for going out.
