it is quite strict, but i find many people who claim to be Catholic just ignore the parts they dont like, mainly relating to sex and contraception. i think the moral basis for the strictness is good, but it is very hard to justify it to friends and family, especially those who claim to be catholic but do not follow all of the beliefs

They are what you might call 'pick and mix' Catholics! I think that is one of our human failings, regardless of any specific faith groups. Catholicism does not have the monopoly on it.

also whats with the not-drinking? im a non drinker myself, but i thought Catholics CAN drink - Jesus drank wine, i think the Bible only says about drunkeness, not teetotalling? please can anyone clarify?

I'm not sure where deej2 is getting his information from as he has some misconceptions about the faith but he appears to be very dedicated. If he is not attending a Catholic school it could be that he is without any proper guidance. I really hope this is not the case but if it is, then maybe those who are more knowledgeable about the faith can provide some guidance. There are no prohibitions on the consumption of alcohol for Catholics. The only guidance is that nothing should be done to excess since it harms both the individual and their relationships with others. We have to first love ourselves to enable us to love others - so anything that is harmful to that love is not encouraged.
Regarding total abstinence from alcohol - in Ireland, which is a predominantly Catholic country, they have what is known as the 'Pioneer Assocation' where like minded members (who have declared their intention to astain from alcohol) meet and socialise in an atmosphere devoid of alcohol. It is by no means compulsory but just serves to provide friendship between people with a common bond.

Someone help me out on this one - why is contraception WITHIN marriage wrong? Let's just say the pill...seeing as condoms effectively kill cells (if you ant to get into the nittygritty)...

Course Catholics can drink - after all look at the Irish :p:
I was brought up a Catholic- in that way I'm privalleged.
Many priests and laity have defected from Anglicans to Catholicism due to their recent changes. Catholicisim remains steadfast- truth is truth. The Anglican attitude is 'we oppose this...it is morally wrong' one minute, then the next 'it is acceptable'... This has not helped the credibility and indeed the popularity of the Anglican Church.
I feel this example shows that the Catholic Church does not need to change. Moving from tradition and from truth infact makes the situation more precarious
As regards Temperance- it is a matter of lifestyle, not Church morals. Excessive drinking can be seen as against the deadly sins, yet in moderation it is acceptable. Indeed, Catholics know how to have a good time!

RhiddynUK and rpotter can only join if they a)believe in the Roman Catholic faith and b) stop making rude anti-Catholic jokes

do you have Catholic friends your age? im 20 and finding it tough to meet Catholics. well actually i meet loads of Catholics- everyone claims to be catholic. but most of them dont even know what the eucharist is, dont go to church, have sex before marriage and even abortions. im not judging them, but its hard finding people who truly believe and enjoy their faith, and who follow all the teachings rather than 'catholic by default'

im hoping to join my uni's christian union Alpha course - has anyone done this before?

I don't bother with Christian unions. Erm at my uni, we have three Sunday masses and they are generally packed. I've met a lot of 'proper' (AS IN FOLLOW THE RULES COMPLETELY) Catholics here, and it made me feel all guility. I agree in the no premarital sex/abortion thing, but personally I'm a lot more liberal eg, whilst I'd never have an abortion, I believe all women should have the right to have one hence I consider myself pretty pro-choice. And all the gay guys I know are lovely, I can't dislike them just for the sake of it.
The Catholic Church isn't anti-Gay at all- just the physical act of homosexuality (if you know what I mean). As Catholics, we should seek to guide and console those around us- including the needy- Gays, those who have had abortions, etc. Since two wrongs do not make a right.
What do you guys think?
Out of interest minimo what Uni. are you at which has such a strong Catholic community?

rpotter - you seem to keep coming back to us, perhaps you are questioning your atheism? if you want to become Catholic again or you have a genuine interest in the religion you are welcome to join and i'll add you to the member list

Meh, nah I'm not questioning my atheism, just get bored and like debating stuff

The thing is I don't see why we should have to 'console' gay people. We don't do so if someone is a different skin colour to us, do we? We accept (I hope) them for who they are. Gay marriage is a different matter, though.

How wonderful! I have never had the opportunity to go to Taize - is it easily arranged?

Our Parish sometimes has a Taize Mass, the church being lit only by candles and the singing of the Taize hymns - I really enjoy it.

I am fortunate to live not too far from Aylesford Priory and the monks sing Vespers and Compline in Latin. It is lovely to join in the whole spiritual experience and feel the sense of inner peace.

Anybody else think that the Taize Kyrie is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever? I sang it at Mass the other day and got to do the descant. It's wonderful!

That was a compliment btw :p:
I've never heard the Taize Kyrie. Although all choral versions of Kyrie Elision are great.
civil partnerships threaten the sanctity of marriage.
What do you guys think?

Lol, it's the Taize choral version of the Kyrie Elision. And I loves it. Am all excited, we've got the Cardinal visiting next week!
Do you not find Cambridge largely Anglican, and in turn, anti-Catholic, since I went for interview at Oxford and found that the colleges were centred around Anglican churches. How do you find it?
I suppose it is the same where ever you go in England.
Just wondering, why is the cardinal visiting? Is it a formal occasion?

No I never felt that way. I don't think these days it's possible to call the colleges Anglican. There are Masses held at different college chapels each week in addition to regular masses at the chaplaincy. Last term there was a massive one held at my college, Trinity (with Gregorian Chant and everything :p: ) and the our college (and chapel Ha.) was founded by Henry VIII.
I'm not sure why he is coming  but should be good (also free food and drink - never say no!)
And there is one 'Catholic' college - St Edmunds.
Also, The uni sent a large contingent off to World Youth Day last year.
