I'm trying to think of players who could play well in each of the outfield positions. Gerrard and Vieira come to mind. How is Vieira doing at Juve?
He is awesome at juve - fits in very well.

Nedved is definately a good call, whoever said that.

I don't know if you have heard of him, but Zambrotta is an awesome all round player he can play full back, on the wings and used to play upfront in his younger days. Barcelona's luis enrique was also a very good all rounder.

    That goes for everyone else?

    Ronaldinho can't defend.

    I'm sorry, am I lost?
No it doesnt go for everyone else. Look at some of the other players who have been mentioned - they are very good all rounders.

In terms of considering him with time spent at Chelsea then yes but you can take into account his time at Lyon. There was a decent article of the all-round nature of Essien mentioned in a news article I read and can't seem to find it.

Viera of a few years ago is a good call, not so much now though - from what I've seen of Juve he's tuning down as such, but that may just be his role in their side. Essien, defo a box-to-box player, does he tick all the boxes of being a complete player? Sounding like a broken record here, but there's noone more complete in the prem than Gerrard. Xavi's a fair call. Keano of old, Veron, Lampard to a lesser extent.. all spring to mind.

Alonso is a DMF how can he NOT defend, if u want sum1 who cant defend look towards traore

Gerrard has got to be the most coplete player. Cant say he cant defend either cos he single handedly defended the goal in the chamions league final at the end.

Alonso is deeplying playmaker - similar to pirlo and and xavi. He is not a holidng midfielder - he does not make tackles in the midfield, cut out play and regularly stay back to protect the back 4. If he could defend, liverpool would never have been 3-0 down at half time in the CL final. Why do you think rafa brough hamman on? Why do u think rafa always plays with either hamman or sissoko now? coz he knows alonso and gerrard cant defend? If gerrard was so good at defending, why doesnt he play the holidng role for England? Ledley King has to come in to play the holding role because Sven has realised Gerrard is incapable of it.

Suggesting Alonso can't defend, tackle, cut play and protect the back four is a bit silly. He's been doing this all season, had done last against Juve, Chelsea et al. Basing fact on one game proves little. A reason why Sissoko/Didi are often played in the centre now is that we need balance on the wing, which Gerrard has temporarily given us. When he switched back to the original formation alonside Alonso against Wigan we won 3-0. As for Gerrard, read the history of other threads. This has been gone through and argued in a lot of detail.

Hence 'to a lesser extent', though they're often plaudited as such.

Alonso is a playmaker, he doesnt defend! Why do you think the spain manager insists on not playing xavi and alonso together? because he knows it is not a balanced partnership as neither can defend.

Against juve, alonso was playing alongside biscan (a holding player). Alonos's job was to create play while Biscan covered his arse and protected the back 4. He didnt defend in this match so next time, make sure what you write is actually true. Again, against Chelsea, Bsican was the holding player, not alonso. And then what happens when they got rid of biscan in the CL final, they concede 3 goals in the first half. This shows that gerrard and alonso are incapable of defending.

At the highest level you will get punished if you play gerrard and alonso in the middle with no holding player. You may have managed it against a poor Wigan side, but when you come to play the likes of Barcelona, inter etc. in the CL, you would get murdered.

You're right in much of that, but I still think claiming that he can't defend is a little, well, short sighted. He's been a rock in defense this season. It's not his role as such, being a playmaker, but you'd be surprised at the amount of defensive duties he does and does well. No, against the top teams he must be paired with specialist for obvious reasons, but for the vast majority of teams we play (we play a Wigan week in week out, not a Juventus) he fares perfectly well in defense. Benitez plays him there deliberately as the deep lying playmaker. If he had no faith in Alonso's protection he wouldn't be there.

OK, we agree against weaker teams Alonso can defend, but against the very top teams, he wouldnt be able to cope?

Agreed. Top teams and, as it is, Gerrard should be on the right with Alonso + Sissoko/Hamann in the centre. In other words, how it is at the moment.

yeh that would be awesome for liverpool. Which team would you want to draw in the 2nd round of the CL btw? I think as long as you avoid bayern and real, any draw is good.
