how much sleep is too much?

I've always liked my sleep but recently i've noticed that i probably sleep too much. 12 hours a night is my usual and the other day i slept for 17 hours I also find it very hard to get up in the morning and have missed loads of lectures. i'll often wake up late in the day and feel dejected after missing out on plans i had because i was asleep. does anyone else suffer this problem or am i just a freakish sleepmonster?

you sleep far too much in my opinion, or maybe thats just jealousy speaking, im lucky if i get 7 hours sleep, and i always seem tired in the mornings. If you wanted advice, try getting an alarm clock, they are wonderful, they wake you up at the time you want to get up rather than the time your body wants to get up! I reckon i could sleep for 24 hours if i didnt have an alarm to get me up!!

Only you can work out what your optimum sleep is. I found that if I sleep too much or too little I feel groggy and tired so you have to work out the amount of sleep you have that makes you feel least tired during the day.

As a guideline for most people it's 8-10 hours, and generally being higher the younger you are. Hence why young children sleep very long and old people only sleep 5 hours in many cases.

Alarms do have their downside like when you wake up naturally a few minutes before the alarm  .I agree 8-10 hours is what most people need ( me for one, but i never do)

17 hours? thats too much way too much 7 -8 hours is just right and just enough. i guess there is nothing wrong with too much sleep, then again it cant be good if it takes up more than half the hours in a day ! lol

Normally I would say 17 hours is way too much, i think beyond 8-10 hours it starts to become unnecessary and you end up feeling more lethargic and turgid than if you had slept for less. But then I suppose it depends on your sleeping pattern and how active you are, I have just arisen from a 15 hour sleep-a-thon after only having 6 hours sleep in the last 2 days (goddamn essays  )

If you think you're sleeping too much, you're the only person that can do anything about it. If you naturally wake up after 10 hours or something, get up and have a shower rather than dozing off again.

17 hours! My mum would think I died and come rushing in

Mines usually 7 to 8. 9 hours if I’m bad

i think 8.5 hours is my optimal to feel awake and not tired

I sleep for 4-6 hours a day. 5 hours on average. 17 hours is too much. Too much sleep makes you fat if you don't exercise!..... I also think you should get an alarm clock, works wonders for me.......

what is your diet like? if your not eating enough of the right nutrients then it will make you more tired.

also just force yourself to get out of bed because your body is prob getting to used to that much sleep

Sounds like me, but not a fan of all these lamers that self diagnose.

i have very irregular sleep patterns at the mo, and i too have been missing lectures. After my Grad application is completed I'm going to make a resolution to attend every lecture and have 7-8 hours a night.

Well I don't think it is hard to misdiagnose yourself in this case because it tells you how much is normal sleep and how much is too much sleep but I don't think it is a big deal being a hypersomniac, it is just the opposite of insomniac.

I think it also depends what time you go to sleep. I've heard something before about every hour of sleep you get before midnight is worth twice as much than after midnight.

hmm well i seem to try and get 10 hours at night and then i always go for a 3 hour nap at midday - so ur not alone at sleeping too much - my housemate does aswell.

Every hour of sleep is going to be before a midnight and after another midnight, that always annoyed me about the gremlins because they weren't allowed to eat after midnight but it is always after midnight. Anyway that has nothing to do with the sleep thing, I think getting an alarm clock would be a good idea and see what your doctor says about it because I know someone who has idio hypersomnia or something like that and I think she takes tablets for it and she sleeps almost normally now.

I simply cannot sleep if i go to bed before midnight, i ALWAYS wake up about 5am then go back to sleep but if i have nothing on get up around 12 noon, i just cant seem to get up any earlier as i feel crap, i always seem tired but can never sleep, im at my most active and alert between 10pm and 12 midnight!
