i have to send off two essays for PPS. Just wondering if they take into consideration that its at the beginning of the year, because my A2 psychology essays aren't full marks standard yet... i got 18/24 in the recent one, just wondering whether they take the fact that its the beginning of the year into account and so still working on our essay technique as to why the marks aren't that good =/

thanks

I think it just deserves a booking

You're being compared against the other applicants. If they're in the same position (most, but not all, will be) and their essays are better, then why shouldn't that be a mark for them and against you? And, if they're not any better, then you don't have a great deal to worry about over this.

They probably don't care about being able to do exam technique, they are more looking for flair and to see if you've done your own research. Most people will be in the same posisition as you, so it shouldn't matter.

Hope this helps

P.S. the mod's will soon move this to the PPS thread...

Do they want essays to be physically marked by your teacher, or rather do they want essays that were just original pieces of work given in?

I have a slight problem too; since this is only the beginning of the year, I don't have any essays (from history or English literature) that are ready to be sent off. (our first lit essay is due tomorrow, whereas our history essays won't be marked for at least another week)

I've already decided that I want to send off a history essay from last year; however, I only have copies of two essays marked: 18/20 and 19/20. (complicated process involving my teacher having shredded all the perfect essays!). Would it be a huge problem to send off an imperfect essay? Or would I be better off sending an English literature essay from last year, in which I scored 30/30 (perfect) on?

I think on the King's college coversheet, they preferred work marked by your teacher, but it doesn't matter.

They say that you need to send the essays that you are happy to discuss in your interview. If your imperfect essay is more relevant to your sibject of choice and that you are still passionate about it, they will see that when you get interviewed. After all, they want to see students who are willing to argue their point.

Also, what type of conditions were your essays written in? Did you have more time for your perfect essay and did you barely had enough time for your imperfect one? They will take that for consideration.

Also, Cambridge isn't looking for "perfect" essays, but essays that explore different topics, or that shows your interest in your subject of choice. Don't worry hun!

Try to send essays from this year, if you have any marked before the deadline for sending work in.

so Ive been reading the Cambridge applicants' thread for 2012 entry and saw that everyone was waiting for an acknowledgment from their specific college. I applied to Gonville and Caius, but received the acknowledgment from general Cambridge Admissions. Is this a problem??

Oh and it also wasn't included in the acknowledgment whether i was being interviewed. could this be another problem?? :s-smilie:

After I sent off UCAS, I got the entire university's general acknowledgement from the email saqadmin@cao.cam.ac.uk. Then it asked me to fill in saq etc etc.

It was only today, at 15:36, that I received an e-mail from the specific college I applied to, Queen's. So I'm sure Gonville and Caius are getting round to sending out their e-mails soon too.

I've heard nothing from Fitzilliam since sending off my SAQ so you're not alone.

Reply 12

Yeah, I've heard nothing from Homerton. Maybe some colleges just don't bother.

Same with Catz!

I'm sure 'imperfect' essays aren't an issue! Last year I sent off one essay that my teacher had given me 30/30 for, but that I really wasn't very happy with writing-wise and in length (but, as you said, as it was the beginning of year there wasn't much choice!), and one that got 27/30 but that I was happier with. In my interviews, at least, the marks, essay length etc. were never even mentioned. In many ways I think it's about them wanting to see how your school marks your essays. It's better to send off something that you'd feel comfortable potentially talking about. As someone said above - they're definitely, definitely not looking for perfection!

So did you send off work that your teacher had written on when marking?

I did, yes.

Corpus emailed me the day after my application was processed!

Reply 18

Well none for me, and I applied to G&C, just the general one from the uni.

But I am an international if that makes any difference.

Reply 19

Yeh, Downing emailed me only a few hours after I got the general one a few days after I sent off UCAS.
