Aaaahh, I just realised that I screwed up one of the maths questions in my interview simply because what is called 'log' in the UK (and apparently worldwide), we call 'lg' (where the 'base' - I hope it's called that - is 10)... Silly Hungarian terminology. :frown:

(As for the Oxford scholars founding Cambridge after a horrible incident - I was once told exactly the same by a tour guide.)

"log" is confusing even in English - in A-levels it mostly refers to base 10, but at uni it mostly refers to base e. ln (pronounced "lun" or "ell en") always means base e.

Are you saying you mistook "log" for "log base e"? Because that's to be expected

Just had a medical interview at cambridge and its a weird experience to have your soul crushed in the space of 15 minutes. Literally, it was a disaster. I got all the questions wrong in the second interview and i could hear the frustration in the interviewer's voice as she tried to make everything sound simpler.

As i walked out the room, i heard them stamp REJECTION on my application in big red letters. Oh well. Wish me luck for th UCL interview the day after tommorow! Im praying it won't be as bad.

This is exactly how I felt about my English interview! In just 25 minutes I began to reconsider whether I actually want to study English, and if indeed I actually want to go to University in September.

I then had the wonderful experience of telling my teachers that it was horrible, I was rubbish, and that I would bet money on being rejected. Wonderful.

In Hungary we use "lg" for "log base 10". When the interviewers suggested that I write down "log" I didn't understand how this would solve the problem and was looking for a base to add to it. As I knew it the base could only be omitted if we used "lg" (suggesting the base is 10) or "ln" (suggesting the base is e).

Overall I don't think it's a major difference, but it still confused me during the interview. I didn't think such differences existed for no apparent reason.

Hi, what college did you apply for? And oh my, that sounds awful, you should have just bluffed it ^^

Interview in 20 hours time... I actually don't feel nervous now... I think my mind has just numbed XD

Lost...all...motivation since interview..

I feel that (a) my grades aren't as impressive as most people's on here and (b) my second interview was a disaster. Thus, I have resigned to the idea of any possibility that Cambridge would maybe offer me a place.

Right now I'm sat here playing Halo 3 whilst eating a small tub of Ben & Jerry's ice-cream. God dammit, this is depressing.

Why, what are your grades? And I'm sure the second interview wasn't as bad as you think... people have a knack of only remembering the failings rather than what went well (says me, who will be complaining about how badly my interview went soon XD)

*patpat* You won't know until January, and even if it's a no, it's not the end of the world. That's how I'm going to look at it :P

Congrats, how did it go? (Don't worry, I won't pester you for details :P)

It was fine! They were really friendly and it was more like a kind of intense chat  Seriously there's nothing to worry about, also the students who hang around are really nice and helpful, they even take you to the interview rooms and are just general babes

Oh, that sounds a lot better than I thought... I'm hoping/expecting that your interviewers are the same as mine. I can deal with intense chats... I think... I just hope I'm not a million times worse than everyone else :P Aww, I'm glad there are some nice students there too, I will be stalking them everywhere so I don't get lost on the way to the interview XD How long were the interviews? I was told 30mins and 45mins, but some people were saying that their's were a lot shorter.

I've been seriously demotivated since coming back from interview as well. I can't for the life of me understand why.

Yeah that's the times they said at the start but it did feel like they were hurrying us through - in my second one I was still gibbering away as we shook hands and they ushered me to the door haha

Ah thanks, good to know. The parentals were wondering how long I'll be in there :P Hopefully it will be long enough to talk about a lot :/
