I'm 100% atheist but I'm godmum to my friends kids. For me it's no big deal really, I'm more like a special auntie to them - my relationship with them isn't religious (excluding xmas pressies)

thats interesting, did they go through the ceremony and things with you then?

Actually thinking about it I wasn't Christened or anything so I think it might have been an unofficial/honourary title! This having been said my mum was never baptised and she's a godmother in a having gone through the religious ceremony way. Maybe she lied about it. I guess if it means nothing to you then saying a few words in a church doesn't really count as anything...?

In summary I know absolutely nothing about the theology of it all - just that having been brought up as an atheist I've still found my 'godparents' have played a big part in my life.

if its a really good friend its probably just easier to say yes, rather than cause any upset. my friend is thinking of asking me and i dont believe in God but i'd say yes because she's my friend and i like the idea of being involved in the kid's life. as other people have said 'godparent' means something different now. for you personally it could mean that you're gonna look out for their kid rather than guide them in a christian way.
