Hi

I don't eat any dairy products because they seriously aggrevate my eczema.

I don't know what made me think of it, but surely now I am missing out on essential nutrients for strong and healthy bones etc, like calcium? Do I need to start taking vitamin supplements? If so, of what?

Thanks guys
xx

I think the best thing to do (if you're really concerned) is to contact your gp, get a few tests done (just normal health checks, you're supposed to get them every now and again anyway). But if you feel fit and well enough to do the things you want to do, then I wouldn't worry about it. Although I heard that vegans have to eat a lot of soy/bean and nuts.... but you eat meat right?

Yeah i do eat meat, its just dairy products I don't eat. You don't really get calcium for bones from anywhere other than milk do you? I cant be bothered with seeing a GP to get tests done, I just want to know what supplements to take to replace the main ones found in dairy products.

Thanks though.
I don't eat dairy as it makes me vom/gag etc.

I don't drink milk
Eat egg on its own (ok cooked in stuff like cakes)
Have butter or spread on their own
Struggle with yoghurt
Cheese is gross (except mozerella)

I eat a lot of meat and have never had any problems. I take multi vits and that's about it and i'm fine. No b one problems or anything. No dramas!

Good plant sources of calcium include tofu (if prepared using calcium sulphate contains more than four times the calcium of whole cow's milk), green leafy vegetables, seeds and nuts. The calcium in green vegetables which are not high in oxalate e.g. kale, is absorbed as well or better than the calcium from cow's milk. Some soya milks e.g. Provamel, Plamil, Granovita are fortified with calcium. Drinking hard water can provide 200mg of calcium daily but soft water contains almost none. Other calcium rich foods include black molasses, edible seaweeds, watercress, parsley and dried figs.

you can get your calcium needs from plenty of other sources. only thing you can get in milk etc and not in other forms is calcium caseinate really, which is used in the production of things like glue. just get a multivitamin with calcium or minerals.

eggs aren't dairy though!
you could try subsituting cows milk with soya, rice or oat milk (they do taste really good!). i would also recommend taking a calcium and vit D supplement...as well as a multi vitamin. i hardly have dairy either- just milk in tea and cheese very very occasionally....youcan definietly get the nutrients from elsewhere, i'd have a look online if i were you...the holland and barret website is quite good.

cheers. i think my skin is worse since i cut out dairy. would that make sense? vitamin D is skin isn't it?

--------------

when i said my skin is worse, i didnt mean eczema, i meant spots... never really had any until recently.
if you skin is worse since you cut out dairy why on earth did you cut out dairy? I know eggs aren't dairy but they live in the fridge amongst the diary and they are wrong :P

i have a few more spots since i cut out dairy, its eczema that gets bad when i eat it! different things! and i find its fine to eat eggs.
probs your body adjusting. go see a nutrionalist. or just take multi vits. Spots are caused by thinkgs such as stress etc and your skin isnormally an indiciation of how your body was 3 weeks prior

what i was thinking!
i wouldn't worry about it- there are tons of people with dairy/lactose intolerance, and if it is aggravating your exzema i would def say cut it out!! i might try too as i quite often get exzema round my nose!!
no i dont think vit D is for skin- i think it helps with calcium absorbtion...might be wrong!!
it's really fine to cut out dairy as long as you make sure you make up for it in other areas- such as by taking supplements or eating/drinking eg. calcium/ protein rich stuff!
