Why do i feel like this?

Ok, well basically ive been feeling really down lately - like really down. I have suffered from an underactive thyroid for years and am taking medication for it. I have just been told that i probably have polycystic ovaries. The thing is i have suffered from anxiety for abut 8 months or so and was having CBT for it, and i got a bit better but recently i just got really depressed. I wish i felt happy cos i have so much going for me and i just wish i could snap out of it - im not making peoples lives easy - like my family and bf - i love them all very much and feel so bad for crying at them all the time and telling them im unhappy - i just dont want to lose them. I fear this very much. I have so much stuff to look forward to but it doesnt make me very happy atm. Im trying so hard to snap out of it and have been to the doctors on numerous occasions. Has anyone else felt bad like this? Does anyone have polycystic ovaries with anxiety and sadness? Is there a link? Any advice much appreciated. xxx

It sounds like you could have depression, it is a medical illness that can be treated, I know because over the past 7 or so years my gran has had depression 3 times but every time she has recoverd from it! Speak to your family, boyfriend, doctor about it, your doctor should be able to give you a diagnosis and give you treatment for it. As it's a psychological condition perhaps it can be made better through therapy, speak to your doctor about it.

It might not be depression but from what you've written, sounds like it could be...

I also have hypothyroidism, although I'm now beginning to feel better. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome isn't the cause of your depression and anxiety; instead depression, anxiety and PCOS are symptoms of hypothyroidism.

I strongly recommend you buy the following books:

Living Well With Hypothyroidism; What your doctor doesn't tell you and what you need to know

The Thyroid Solution

The only way I have managed to pull myself through this illness is to educate myself about it and understand how to get what I want from my GP, as GPs are notoriously useless at dealing with thyroid problems. Had I left important decisions to my doctor, I'd still be unwell today.

I hope I have helped.

How much thyroxine do you take daily btw?

Hey,

thank u so much for ur reply. U have really helped me feel that im not alone. I take 50mcg - thats not much i dnt think. The thing is though my levels seem to be ok atm regarding my thyroid (i recently had a full blood count) - TSH etc... Also, im on thyroxine which is replacing the thyroxine my body isnt producing so how can my hypothyroidism be still causing me probs? Is it still pos for me to be on right dosage of thyroxine and still have probs?

Yeh, ur right about docs - he hasnt been all that great about the thyroid. My mum has had it for yrs too and it took about a year and a half for them to diagnose her - she was soo ill by the time they did - people thought she was dying.

Thanks again

The problem with TSH levels is GPs are given a range back from the lab with your result. If your TSH level is within this range then you are "normal". As these books explain, that isn't usually the case for the individual. You may well still be suffering with symptoms of hypothyroidism, because we are all different and require different hormone levels to function properly regardless of what their test results say. For example...

Earlier this month I went to see my GP after a TSH test. She said I was "hyperthyroid" because my TSH was 0.4, and the "normal" lab range starts at 0.5, so my TSH was the smallest fraction below the range. She wanted to reduce my thyroxine dose despite me telling her that I was feeling better than I usually do, so I refused to let her because what she was saying was ridiculous! She insisted that I have another TSH test, so I did and the results of that were then "normal" . Had she reduced my dose I probably would be unwell again now!

50mcg isn't an awful lot for somebody who's suffering as much as you are. I'm on 150mcg and I'm genuinely feeling a lot better at the moment. Admittedly I've been on 150mcg for a year now, and it's only this month that I've noticed that I've picked up, but from what I've read it takes quite a while to recover. Doctors believe that when your TSH is in the "normal" range and you're still experiencing symptoms, it can't be your thyroid causing you problems.

I wasn't happy with my GP so I requested to see an endocrinologist. He increased my dose to 150mcg and ran thyroid antibody tests, so I now know the cause of my hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's Disease, which is almost impossible to reverse. Seeing an endocrinologist would be a good idea.
